I need some good advice. We have a 1 1/2 year old nutured male, Monty, who is super sweet to adults but is starting to show aggression towards children. i am super scared as I am 4 1/2 months pregnant and cry at the thought of having to get rid of him. he has no medical problems, plays well with other dogs, is generally a lazy, happy dog. He has a sister who is a chocoalte lab and they have never fought. He never had a problem before and we have always wathced him around kids. He has jsut started to growl and act weird. My husband and I have no clue where to go with this. We think training, but I wonder if we need to find someone who knows more about training our breed and not general training? Please, if anyone could help I would appreciate it. I am really concerned!
I am sorry that the trainer was a bit abrupt
But dont give up on finding someone to help you.
Did I give you the trainers name, if so, can you e-mail me with her/his name. I will try to find someone else for you.

bully aggression
Hi Kayli,
I am frantically trying to find someone good in Northern Virginia before she hurts a dog.. or person...A lot of it seems to be protecting me. However just the other day she slid out the door and ran after a German Shepherd ready to rip his head off. It is so hard trying to find a good trainer that won't make it worse. Best of luck and you are not alone. Giving her up would never be an option. They are my children...
We are having a similiar problem with our two year old...not especially with people but with other dogs.. it is awful. I was given a name from the board but unfortunately in talking with this trainer I decided she wasn't for my baby. She was mad at me for having two females in the house and told me that was stupid....

OH Lynn K...where are you??? This lady needs a behavioral consul
Lynn K. should be able to find someone near who is certified...sometimes private behavioral lessons are better than class lessons b/c trainer can see what exactly triggers the behavior and then find a solution.
Hope things work out.

yes..shop around well before choosing a trainer...
you definitely need some training for him...he's at a perfect age to work with...old enough to hopefully concentrate a bit and young enough so that this misbehavior is not a long-standing habit...but you need to observe the trainer with his/her students to see how they are motivated, how discipline is handled, what the setting is and how comfortable you think you'll be/your dog will be, in that setting (ie, indoors or out, small group or larger one). The breed of dogs involved is secondary to the attitude of the trainer...you definitely want someone who uses "positive reinforcement" (rewards of praise and/or food) rather than physical restraint (shock collars, ear-pinching, prong collars). Bulldogs are a very stubborn and strong breed. If you don't approach the training correctly, you can end up by making things worse. Hopefully someone in your city can recommend a group or trainer who will be good for your bully, but you still need to check out the teacher! Most classes last about one hour, for about 8 weeks, and then you need to continue working with the dog so that the memory pattern is established...perhaps continue with a second group of lessons, a bit more advanced...see how it goes. With daylight savings now, and warmer weather, its a great time to get started. What city are you located in or near?
