Well brutus broke out again even worse. I gave him a bath saturday and rolled him over and his belly was completely broke out. Red bumps completely covered his chest. Just four days ago after a bath his chest and belly were the only area that wasnt broke out. It looked alot like poison ivy or poison oak, which I had recently gotten and had to go to the doctor for. My first thought is that I gave it to my boy. I took Brutus to the vet and they said that it wasnt poison ivy but that he was the worst he had been since seeing him. So heres their new diagnostic. They think because of the dark areas of skin that lacks hair he could have a thyroid problem. The vet said that it would also explain the break-outs and lack of energy. Anyone ever experience this problem before?
Hope others will look at these pics. Ela1ne??? Helen???
good to know you ruled out thyroid.

ARE YOU USING A SHOWER HOSE TO RINSE HIM? Are you drying him in front of a fan or with a cool hairdryer?
Stop using Malaseb Shampoo. Try Chlorhexiderm Shampoo.
Flea allergy? What flea preventative are you using? Maybe try a different one.
Maybe someone else will have an idea.

Not a thyroid problem!!!
Well I heard from the vet today and my boys thyroid is normal. When I give him a bath I do use the malaseb shampoo but am very carefull to rince all the soap off. His bottom arround his tail was red and irritated and after reading a few post realized I had to be more careful there too. I make sure it is very clean and dry. It has since then cleared up. I am very careful with his ears also. They are clean dry and normal pink color. Is it possible he could be allergic to cats?
Hope these pictures help.

Re: Carpet fresheners ?
Something to use in case your dog has a bad reaction to commercial carpet fresheners is to buy a big box of Baking Soda, shake into the carpet, let it sit for a few hours and then vac. It really helps with pet odors and doesn't have perfumes or chemistry to cause problems. And it is much cheaper too.

Carpet fresheners ?
Do you use any powders or sprays on your carpets ?
In the UK we call it " shake n vac" one of my bullies had a similar rash after I used it a couple of years ago.

To me
those bald spots look like staph. They ruled that out?

I'm baffled by that rash..
Looks like his hair is thin too. And those little bald circles...hmm..

Have you been to a different vet?
I would stop using that flea med just because it's one more thing to try changing.
Chlorhexiderm Shampoo is by the same company that makes Malaseb. You can order it on Amazon or from Entirelypets.com. I only suggest it because others on this board, including me, have had dogs who had reactions to the Malaseb.
I'm assuming your vet has done a skin scraping, right?
I can understand your frustration.
What is his bedding made out of? Does he lay on a wool rug? Have you tried dusting all his creases and crevices with Gold Bond?
I know you said you had him on pred.

I do use a shower hose but do not blow dry. Bio spot is the flea medication I use and have never seen a flea. The other thing is that I do have an air purifier and that doesnt seem to have any effect either. I will switch shampoos but I have never seen chlorhexiderm. When he was a baby I used to blow dry him, and maybe I should again. The shampoo has me bewildered. When I wash him with the malaseb the redness goes away for a couple of days and he looks like he will clear up. He also seems to feel better and has more energy. Then out of the clear blue on the third or fourth day the rash just magicaly reappears. He smells like a sweaty dirty dog with mange.

Can you share pics, Mike?
could certainly be thyroid. Simple test will tell. Hairless dark skin on sides can be Seasonal Flank Alopecia. It's common and harmless.

I want to see Brutus. Share some pics of him if you can.

could be the Malaseb Shampoo. Try Chlorihexiderm Shampoo..
Also, are you certain you are rinsing, rinsing, and rinsing again even when you think you have him all rinsed off???

Are you using a shower hose to rinse the shampoo off? You have to have a spray hose to rinse these guys with sensitive skin. Any smidgen of soap left on him will cause a breakout.

Absolutely logical...
A simple blood test will tell the story. If his thyroid is off he will need daily medication for the rest of his life.
Luckily the medication is inexpenive.
