Balding Bully

My vet just called and said Bo's thyroid is well within the normal range. He wants him on 24mgs of melatonin and 2400 mgs of fish oil every day. Bo has had bald patches for about 3 months now on his sides. Of course now he's shedding like a beast on top of the bald spots. Is this seasonal alopecia instead??? That seems like alot of melatonin, but he's a well respected bully doctor so I trust him. Am I going to have the only known bald bully in the world?

what supplement and topical do you use?

I did not know fish oil is hard to digest. I have been giving the 1000mg caps to my girls daily.

Julie had bald spots on her for 5 years till I started using a f

on her. Now the spots are filling in. I do not like to give fish oil since it can cause allergies and is hard for dogs to digest.

90 lbs...

Has your vet checked his thyroid? Or is he just a big bully?

We tried the melantonin for a while...

Calm Coat has done more for us than anything else.... It's pretty cheap to try...Use the link here on the forum, there's a discount if you're interested.

It also doesn't seem to bother Bruno - I call him "My Naked Man!" and he comes running... happy.gif

Re: I also have a bald bully...

It doesn't seem to bother him or itch at all. Did your vet recommend melatonin?

Re: PS>

I'm wondering what other owners have had recommended to them. I searched around as well, and didn't really find any "standard" amount. Bo is niney pounds so.........

I also have a bald bully...

Bruno's baldness is from untreated allergies before his owners dumped him in the shelter..... The damage was done, we have VERY little hair growth after two years of "babying" his skin...

PS>

When I did a little reading on a couple of Google searches, I found the doses you mentioned of both the melatonin and fish oil are within what some authors feel is helpful so I'm NOT saying that these numbers appear 'excessive' but rather that they seem okay, and the signs of upset/intolerance are usual gastro-intestinal. HTH

you might want to do some reading about customary dosing

of melatonin for SFA or baldness...and watch for any adverse reactions such as intestinal upset at the dose recommended. Sometimes I think docs forget that with this breed its not only looking at their total body weight (heavy) but that their internal workings can be much more delicate (easily upset).

I'm also assuming that your vet has checked this dog for mange and staph infections previously...and I mean using cytology (magnification of skin scrapings - several locations) under microscope and not just visual evaluations. happy.gif
