Bacterial Infection

Good afternoon. I have an 8.5 month bulldog named Bella. She has been the picture of perfect health until 2 weeks ago. SHe broke out in sores only on the barrel of her chest and under her chin. THe vet diagnosed the baterial infection and gave a shot of AB and steroids - with 7 days of follow up AB at home. Also prescribed antibacterial wash every 3 days. The sores got better, AB ran out last Wednesday. Fiday the sores were back, only on her feet this time. I have washed all of her bedding again (I wash it weekly already) and took her crate outside and scrubbed it and gave it a diluted bleach rinse. I have scrubbed her food bowls as well as their regular wash in the dish washer. Do you have any ideas what could be contributing to this? Should I replace all her toys since I am not able to bleach them and rinse fully? Any thoughts are apprecaited!

Thank you everyone. I did get the gold bond powder and the condiment bottle for an applicator last night. I have been lurking around this board since I brought Bella home at 2 months. I will keep looking for the probiotics - they are not really prevalent in the stores around here. I will probably try the yougurt first. I do appreciate everyone's help. - Jen

have the same problem

My boy has had that problem for two years. At three monthes we found out he was allergic to the plastic feed bowls. His neck and chest were always broke out. Made sense because that part of him always touched the bowl. Just last night I found out my boy is allergic to Tide detergent. So as you can imagine I have alot of laundry to do today. Vets have had my brutus on prednisone and antibiotics for two years. I have spent thousounds of dollars to get him better and nothing has worked. A week ago I was so desperate I blogged this website and have recieved better advice from these people than my vets. As it turns out it has been the simple things that you probably wouldnt consider and it was these good people that made me aware. I hope you get the skin allergy under control. When the itching gets so bad that your dog scrathes till he bleeds its harder to repair. Trust me on this! I have come home from work to find my walls covered in blood. If there is anything I can do let me know. I know how hard it is to watch your baby suffer.

you should forward her all those emails..

maybe some of it will help her. After this is over, you may become the resident expert! We all help each other here. I sometimes think BDW is better than a vet!

In lieu of yogurt I prefer Kefir

yogurt is good but I find kefir better. You can find it in most large grocery stores in the organic section of the refrigerator. It is similar to a smoothie but has much more probiotics in it than yogurt. I also find acidophilus(sp) capsule work great also when on antibiotics. You could also give Bene-Bac.

I give regular, fat free yogurt...

one tablespoon per meal, which here is twice a day. My girls do great with it:-)

yes to the skin scrape

Thank you for the replies. The vet did a skin scrape 2 weeks ago - they were really bad and did almost 100% clear up on the first round of AB. They did not do a second one, just perscribed another round of AB for a week. I will also try the gold bond tonight. Do you give just regular yougart for pro-biotics or a pill?

Did the Vet do a skin scrape?

If not then she needs one to determine if in fact it is a bacterial infection and not something else.

this might be difficult....

if a bacterial infection giving steroids makes it worse as the immune system goes down and the bacteria flares up.....(the antibotics you some times have to have if it is out of hand) it will spread your dog itches her chin on her feet...what i would do is...use some stridex the same thing used in humans for pimples...keep the affected areas clean and dry at all times....moisture makes the problem worse....this is also a age thing hormones are flaring up....do you have her on probitcs or some good old yogurt??? get some gold bond i use the medicated gold bond to keep those moist areas clean and dry....
the most important thing is keep those area dry....
