Is this the average price?? ( elongated palate surgery)

Hi I talked to you a few of you last week about Boog needing surgery for an elongated palate. Just got an estimate back form the vet $2300.00 - 3200.00. I'm just shocked at that. Anyone else had it done recently..... by the way I live in the Toronto area.

So true, the vet prices here are crazy,

If I need a big surgery done, I may go to the U.S (after I order a passport now..lol) either to Michigan or Buffalo, depending where I find a recomended vet, but Buffalo is alot closer.

The vet prices here are crazy. I pay almost $140 for a bag of vet food, my dogs need this food to keep their stool firm, I have tried other foods, but they poop everywhere..lol, so I am trapped with this food, and it keeps going up in price, crazy. Maybe I can go to a vet in Buffalo and stock up..lol.

Not yet, but Roscoe may need his done,

Roscoe is only 6 months, and it is not really bad right now, so I have heard suggestions to wait until he is older, my vet also thinks we should wait and see. Roscoe's breathing is fine and he is active, he just has the rumbly snore when he breathes. The vet also noticed it when he was in surgery for his eye, but said it is not bad enough to fix yet.

M-^@ 450

including a set of x-rays of the backhand, because the dog has been favoring one leg....

This price is including ab's, anaestesia, bloodtest and x-rays and done by a very experienced vet!

It is almost worth flying to the Netherlands for.

this is my suggestion too

Toronto isn't too far from Detroit, Toledo or even Cleveland (Dr. Hutch is there and has a wonderful Clinic) Sounds like even with traveling expenses and maybe a few nights in a Hotel, it would still be cheaper.

Re: I am in Toronto also, what vet do you use?

Hi Miranda, I go to Dr. George Hillis in Oshawa. I know that he operates on Bullies regularly at his office. But for Boogs case he feels we really need the expertise at Morningside. Thank you for the info, it can't hurt for me to give them a call. I'm so impressed with how helpful people are on this forum. Have any of your dogs had surgery for an elongated palate?

Thank you for the replies... I need to add...

I believe that also includes neutering, I forgot I had even talked to my vet about including that. But from your comments, i think you'll all agree thats still really high. I will see if that price includes some optional things. I will keep you posted!

My vet is a bit more expensive than others, but even he is not that high I am sure.

Try Beaches animal hospital, ask for Dr Dilworth, he is great.

Great vet near Lansing, MI

We drove from northern Indiana to Okemos, Michgan, (just outside of Lansing) for Dozer's palate surgery. The total bill was around $820. When we called a nearby hotel to make a reservation, my husband told them we were bringing our dog for surgery and they gave us a 2 bedroom suite with a full kitchen for $119/night. I would highly recommend checking into the MI vets. Good luck to you!

Oh yeah...we are all-too-familiar with palate surgery here!!

Many of us have had this procedure done, either because the dog couldn't have a life without it...or it was an option to improve the quality of life so that the dog could participate in more activities without struggle or concerns.

get a written quote

when suggesting surgery that pricey, the vet should give you a printed quote which itemizes everything from beginning to end, including post op rechecks and meds (and what meds they are). That is the only way you will know exactly what you will get for your money and this way you can more easily be able to compare prices.I got a written detailed quote from the same clinic a few years ago.
The neuter is a quick thing if both are down and since your bully is already under, should not influence the price much at all.
BTW do you have insurance?

Have you considered trip to US vet? Michigan

perhaps? I am honestly not sure if this is even a viable idea but I live in lower Michigan and have an excellent bulldog vet. I have never had a a bulldog that has had this surgery so I could not say for sure, but I am thinking that you could drive, stay overnight in hotel and have surgery for far less cost here than what you apparently have to pay in Canada. I do know that my vet that is in GR has several bulldogs that come from Detroit. With border issues and follow up care it may not be feasible at all. But if you think it might be, I would be willing to get some info from my vet.

I've heard that here in BC the $ for that surgery is 350 - 400!!

That is way too much I think!! PS this is a bulldog that specializes in this surgery.

That is too high...

even with the US to Canadian dollar exchange, that is about 50% higher than we would pay here...and I think you need to ask for a detail of what that price includes because some of the items may be "optional" ???

what can we do?

about our high vet prices here in Canada? (nothing!) If it is a vet with experience, then it looks like we have to pay for it. Mr. Higgins had ACL surgery last summer along with luxating patella for the second time on the same leg. He ended up with his patella removed. His airway was also done (palate/saccules). He spent the first night in ICU then had lots of ongoing issues with the knee including a lasting seroma that was drained 5 times. It still remains. All totalled, including meds, follow up checks, $8500.00!!
Securican Insurance decreased my coverage down to 50% again, but after the surgery was paid for. hehe
You could get another quote from the specialists downtown at the Vet Emerg/Referral Clinic. They are excellent. 920 Yonge St. 416 920-2002
Also post on the meetup group message board. Lots of our bullies in the Toronto area have had palate resections and/or saccules and nares Done.

No, I'm not in Canada

My bulldog Vet did the surgery and we had no need for a specialist. I hope someone can refer you to a good Vet who is hopefully cheaper. Good Luck!

Re: No, that's very high

Are you in Canada? I'm not sure what to do. I took Boog to our vet, who by the way is excellent and very experienced in Bullys. It seems that for this kind of surgery you have to be referred to a specialist, and this is the price quoted to me by the specialist, ( Morningside in Scarborough). If there is anyone living in the Toronto area, that has any ideas please let me know!

No, that's very high

Maizy had the surgery and also had entropian surgery on all four lids at the same time and it was $1,300. And when Morgan had the surgery, it was $900.

The price can vary greatly from Vet to Vet but I see no reason for it to be that high.
