We need to find a bully vet and we used to go to Dr. Barney in Fairfield but it is quite a drive and he is all booked until middle of march. If you go to this vet clinic could you refer a bully vet that is good. Our bully has been having his urine tested and they found he has several kind of bacteria and he's been on so many antibiotics and once he's off, his urine would stink so bad again. We think he may have a bladder infection and if so, will probably need surgery so we are looking for a specialized bully vet. When we got him as a puppy his urine did smell, but as he gets older the smell is really bad. He is our first bully so we don't know if this is a hereditary problem or if the breeder was aware that he has this problem and still sell the puppy to us. His lower jaw sticks out so much about 3 inches and it also makes it hard for him to eat. When we bought him, we were told he and the other puppies were show quality so not sure why his bottom jaw is longer and sticks out so you could see his teeth. He is 9.5 months now, do you think his jaw would grow to be normal and that this is just a growing stage?

we flew the breeder over and picked up the puppy at the airport

What state did your dog ship from?

Just wondering if you could remember what state your dog shipped from.

I agree that a check for bladder stones is prudent way to

proceed, given the blood in the urine and the continuing infections, altho I don't know enough animal medicine to know what the liver could have to do with this...its the kidneys that filter the fluids in the body, sending the waste thru to the bladder which then empties thru the ureter...the liver is the body's filtration system for blood!

Please tell me that this vet isn't affiliated with PetCo, PetSmart or any of the other large instore operations at pet supply stores! Those practices are notorious for over-testing dogs to run up charges.

Please tell us how your dog is doing next week, after the tests, and I truly hope you can get to the bottom of his problems...he's too young to be having this much trouble.

the reg. vet called and said he has 2 bacteria

in his bladder and one of it is resistant to baytril and clamavox. Tomorrow, we have to bring him in to do bloodworks, xrays and maybe an ultrasounds to see if there are any stones in his bladder. the vet said it's strange that when he's on the antibiotics the smell does away, but a week after he's off the antibiotics, the smells comes back. So she wants to run some tests and test his liver.

He is very sweet, and we love him dearly. We are just worried about his health. We have a big deep dish and he eats really fast, just looks a bit awkward. He eats natural balance duck and potatoes and we've been soaking it since he was little. And he drinks water normally. Other than that, he eat, pees, poop, and play normal. There was a trace of blood in his urine 2 days ago, and it's not the bright red kind, it's kind of like a milky red color. Hopefully the bloodworks will tell us more. I live in Milpitas, CA

Dee, where do you live?

There is an excellent Bulldog vet in Folsom, CA. Dr. Jennifer Sweet- Blue Ravine Animal Hospital. This vet clinic sees tons of Bulldogs and Frenchies. I take all my animals there. (916)984-0990

Well said!

Good advice about the bowl, great statement about the dog!

Some comments

Re the odor in his food...it could be related to the type of food he is eating, whether or not he's drinking enough water/liquid to dilute the urine properly (which might also be cause of bacterial infection?)and I question whether you have discused food type with the vet, whether you have tried soaking his kibble to get more liquid into him, etc.

Re his jaw, this is basically what his head will be, although it may grow another inch or two in width, the jaw is not regulation (not show quality) and this sometimes happens with bullies but its also usually indicative of what genetics were in play in this breeding...a 'poor jaw' that extends 3 inches outward without the upturn is genetics and I'm suggesting that the breeder didn't understand the genetics involved in this breeding (including a few generations back!) or he was just untruthful with you at time of purchase. In either case, altho the dog may have some difficulty eating from certain-types of bowls, you can assist him by using something with a curved bottom (rather than a plain flat bottom) and the jawline doesn't determine the sweetness or lovability of this dog or any other dog. He doesn't know his jaw is irregular...he just knows that he wants love and is capable of returning it many times over.
