Any Advice would be app.

I have a 1yr old bulldog. She is usually very active and happy. Yesterday she started acting a little lathargic and slept a lot. She had a lot sleep in her eyes and was slow to respond. She also didnt eat or drink as normal and didnt have BM. Today she was still lathargic and slow to respond but seemed to be doing a little better. We werent sure if she just wasnt feeling well because her breathing was normal and she was at least eating and drinking, so I decided to give it a day before taking her to the vet. Ive figured out her problem is something to do with her neck. Moving it up or down or side to side makes her cry which isnt normal for her. And sometimes moving her limbs makes her cry. Her stomach also seems a little tight. None of theses symtoms seemed that bad this afternoon but now they are. She has had a BM today but as I type she seems to be having a small seizure. Shes only shaking her head back and forth and is conscience and responsive to us talking to her. I just have NO clue what could possibly be wrong. She is extremely healthy and has never been sick or had ANY problems. The only thing I can think of is we have to keep a close eye on things such as toys bc she will eat ANYTHING and I mean ANYTHING. IDK if she might have gotten ahold of one of my daughters toys behind my back. Would this cause this behavior? I plan to take her 1st thing in the morning but will she be ok until then?

Well, the good news is that there's some understanding

of what needs to be treated...she has some massive infection if her WBC is so high, and of course the partial intestinal blockage, which can come from many reasons, will hopefully resolve itself with IV fluids and steroids to reduce swelling along with antibiotics for the infection. I suppose an inflammed section of intestines/bowel could look like a closed pyometra on film...not that skilled at reading x-rays as a vet would be, certainly!! So the vet did or did-not remove the uterus??

Thanks for sharing the news with us...and of course we're wishing your bully a great recovery. If there's anything we can help you with while she's healing, please ask...and we hope you will remain with Bulldogworld so we can watch your bully grow and keep up with her good times, coming down the road. happy.gif

UPDATE!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ok so I have been at the vet since 10am!!! They 1st did xrays and blood work. The blood work came back as she is severely anemic. Her white blood count was also at 32000 and its supposed to be at 16000!!!! The xrays showed swelling and blockage in her abdomen so the dr was very sure it was an infected uterus. They gave me the option of treating with antibiotics and iv fluids and keeping her over night which isnt a guarentee to cure in infection bc her infection is the closed type. Or I could go ahead and remove the uterus and like an absest the problem would be solved. It was a HARD HARD decision but ultimitaly her health is way more important than any chance or hope of one day breeding so I chose to go ahead and spay her and remove the swollen and infected area. But I just got a call from the dr and she said the uterus looks fine!!! She said her intestines are pretty swollen and filled with fluid but that she and her uterus will be fine! She had some blockage and hopefully I can go pick my baby up tonight and cuddle her while she recovers!!! I never expected this at all!! Ive only had her 11months!!!

Sue, I agree. Lymes was my first thought

the symptoms can come on very suddenly and then just disappear.

Relax and stay calm...

Kerrie, I'm so sorry that you are having to go through this...especially without your hubby. Just stay calm and make sure her temp does not go up and that she stays hydrated...that is the most important things you can do besides getting her to the vet first thing in the morning. If I were you, I would be at the vet when they open...

Stay calm and take care of your babies...they can both tell if you are stressed...and it will just make things worse...RELAX and take a deep breath.

Please keep us posted on your pup.

Kerrie if she continues with the "siezure"/ head shakes...

You should at least call your vet or the emergency vet. I feel so bad for you...I hope she will eat the yogurt and it stops the head shakes. You need to take her to the vet in the morning for sure...unless she gets worse tonight. If you have a good relationship with your vet, you should be able to contact him or whoever is on call at your vet clinic tonight.

How is she doing now?

Sounds like idiopathic head tremors and do nothing...

let the vet examine the dog tomorrow but for now, just keep her calm and comfortable. If her fever goes above 103 when she's just resting, you might need to put her into a cool (not cold!!) bathtub or shower to cool her down to 101 but she should be okay. Tremors can be very scary but often they are difficult to pinpoint the "why"...you can give her a tablespoonful of ice cream (not chocolate) if you have that, or yogurt, or even sorbet just in case she has low-sugar but if she's been eating regularly and not vomiting that is not what I would expect...it does not harm and may help. Til tomorrow. happy.gif

Re: could it be the head shakes instead of a seizure?

It sounds more like head shakes! I will try yogurt right now! No temp though! I am giving her water by mouth. Let me try the yogurt now!!

Re: Kerrie...please let us know if her fever is far off what

Her temp was 103 and thats when she was very hot. She was doing fine until right now. Shes starting the almost seizure type thing again. I mean shes fully conscience and not doing any of the crazy stuff I read shes just shaking her head back and forth really fast and pants while shes doing it. Then shes fine! 8hrs until the vet opens what should i do??

could it be the head shakes instead of a seizure?

some say that head shakes are caused by low blood sugar. Our girl, Chloe had the head shakes when she was younger and we gave her a little ice cream or regular sweetened yogurt and she would be fine within a few minutes.

just a suggestion...by the way, make sure she drinks water. if she won't drink water, give her a little chicken broth. it is very important to keep her hydrated.

Please let us know how she checks out tomorrow...

Re: With this breed especially, BREATHING is the most

Thank you so much I feel like I can realx until morning! I dont mind paying the price for her health but the after hour care is soooo expensive, so if I cant wait until morning that would be great since everything is so tight these days!! Right now shes panting for the first time in a while probably bc during the minor seizure type thing I covered her in a warm blanket. She seems to be going in and out of the shakey spells but her gums are normal and breathing is normal. No blood or vomitting either! I will def take her in tomorrow but thank you for the reassurance! I will also take her tempature right now!!

With this breed especially, BREATHING is the most

telling thing as to when the dog has a problem...certainly bleeding, vomiting, and dizziness would cause great concern, but if the dog is breathing normally and the color of her gums is a healthy normal mid-pink, you can wait until morning.

Have you even taken her temperature? It should be between 101 and 103 degrees F. If she's been resting, it would more likely be the lower number. I would expect the vet would draw blood to check the function of her basic organs (liver, kidneys, pancreas, etc) and listen to her lungs, palpate her lymph nodes in several locations to check for swelling...there's lots of things that a vet will check that you may not be individually aware of, but yes she does need a good exam.

As for the goop in her eyes, if its only mild it could be related to Springtime allergens in the air, a windy day or other seasonal responses. I'd mention that too but don't think that is the heart of her problem. Good luck...please tell us what you learn tomorrow and how she is doing. happy.gif
