Does anyone have a dog that suffers from anxiety? If so, do you use medication to treat the anxiety? Morgan has been suffering from anxiety when we travel. She pants during the entire car trip and recently we have been traveling several hours to shows. It usually takes her awhile to settle down once we reach the hotel. I discussed her anxiety with my Vet and he prescribed Xanax.
I was wondering if anyone else gave their dog Xanax and what were the results?
That's weird...
I was just researching anxiolytic meds for a friend. Her vet just prescribed doggie prosac for her dog with super severe separation anxiety (she is also doing behavior modification with a trainer). In my research, valium and xanax were mentioned for more rapid, temporary, and intermittent anxiety relief.
No experience with this, myself. One of the sites also mentioned melatonin and that homeopathic calm solution (I forget what it's called...) which you might want to consider.
Kano used to hate going in the car. She would throw up several times. It took months before she was OK. She still isn't crazy about car rides, but she got much better (with a LOT of ahort car rides). I found that she felt much more comfy in a crate.

Kind of like the kettle calling the pot black, isn't it?
I mean about the being weird thing. OH! You were talking about the coincidence of you just researching that stuff, then Jacinda asking the question! Oh, well that's a little weird, yes. Very odd to have all that info in your head that she needs, right when she needs it:-)

You just couldn't help yourself, could you??? lol
You're gonna miss me when I'm gone! (not that I'm planning on goin g anywhere... But, you would miss me!)

She's always been fine in the car, never car sick
But, this last year has been hard on her. She was really close to my Mom so she was understandly upset when we lost her. Also, we have been traveling quite a bit this last year and Morgan had never been so far away from home.
The other three bulldogs are excellent travelers and love to ride. But, poor Morgan pants the entire time and will not lay down and rest. I have tried crating her, not crating, riding in the front seat with me, and riding in the back seat. Nothing helps. I have also tried Rescue remedy and it doesn't really help either.
Sigh, I hate medicating her but I can't stand to see her stressed so I will try the Xanax and hope that helps.
My boy Dobe, Dodger, had extreme anxiety issues Jacinda.
Not so much in the car, but when I or anyone else left our home, even if they were just there to deliver a package, Dodger would freak out. We tried many things, none really worked. I did NOT try Xanax.
One product I tried that did no good was Rescue Remedy. Made Dodger into a really pissy drunk as far as I could tell, but took none of the anxiety away:-) My vet did give me a pill once when I had to travel to Arizona with my big dogs. Dodger did great. He was cool and calm. Don't know what it was though:-) But when I stopped at a rest area to get a snack, I was at the vending machine and suddenly my horn started beeping. Then it stopped. Then it started. I looked....Dodger had gotten in the drivers seat and was so groggy, he kept falling forward on the horn, then would correct himself and sit back. Then fall forward and beep, then sit back. It was hilarious because I was just getting ready to push the buttons on the vending machine, and it was like he was tellling me "No, the other one..beep beep". "No, not that one, beep beep"!! Silly boy. Gosh I miss that dog...

Silly Dodger
I can see him now honking the horn, too funny.
If it is just panting,
maybe it is nausea and not anxiety?
I had a dog that didn't travel well to shows and thought it was nervousness and tried the Rescue Remedy, Calms pills, Benedryl and even a perscription med from the Vet. None of these helped him at all. But what really helped him was when I started to give him 2 Tums tablets before we started on a trip. He was having an upset tummy and panting because of his discomfort, it really wasn't anxiety after all.
Here is a photo of the dog after I figured out what was bothering him -
Hmmm....
I really hadn't thought about it possibly being a stomach ache. She doesn't drool or throw up so I decided it must be anxiety. It certainly won't hurt to give her tums or a pepcid. Thanks!
ps. Nice looking boy!
I had not thought of that either.
Interesting. I don't have any dogs now that have issues when traveling, but I am going to keep this info in mind for the future.

Actually Common
Jacinda - There are many dogs that don't travel well. My Belgium Tervuren was a horrible traveler, anxiety, drooling, vomitting. I was so dang thankful that she finished at 12 months. I've been lucky with all my bulldogs to have great travelers. They hit the car and a snoring within a block of the house.
Esters mom Holly, Ester's brother Roast and Ester's 1/2 sister Chloe all have travel anxiety. They sit and pant and never relax. I know Vicky has tried a number of things without much success. Short of knocking them out I think you will probably always have a stressed traveler.
Tums is certainly worth a try as well as Lavender. I'd start there before I went on to the stronger stuff like Zanax.
Thanks Deb
She's never had this problem until last year. Of course, she had never traveled several hours in a car before either. I had hoped she would improve with more travel but instead she seems to be getting worse.
yep and they all have been in the car alot
I have tried it all, nothing has helped. I will not ace my dog but have been told it will help

Can you put her in a crate and cover the crate?
She might be getting car sick and eliminating the visual movement can help. Maybe a good chew toy ie.-stuffed Kong/marrow bone will help to keep her distracted.
Also, there is a product called DAP that helps with anxiety. I would go with medication only as a last resort.
Ginger also helps with upset tummies.
Good luck
