Another hive question.....

Hives must be the topic of the day!! Well, Oliver (5 months old) developed hives on his back area only on Tuesday. I had given him a bath on Monday and used a little bit of chlorohiderm on him because he had a little spot that looked a little like staph. That was the first time I had ever used that shampoo on him so I thought maybe that was it. I am washing his bedding even though we didn't get any new detergent or anything. I am now thinking it may have started with a bee. My husband tells me that the other day he found him trying to eat a bee that got in the house. He didn't swell up or anything so we weren't sure if he got stung or not. Could these hives be a reaction to a bee sting? If so, how long will they last? Do we need to see a vet? We gave him 1/2 a benadryl starting on Wednesday. On Thursday I gave him a bath in his normal shampoo and rinsed really well. We are still doing the 1/2 a tab of benadryl but the hives are still there and not going away. Can we give a whole benadryl or is he too young? I think he is probably about 30-35 pounds. Any advice is appreciated.

bought enough benadryl and the gives will stay

It can take a few days for them to go away on a full dose the lower dose is not doing much. He should be about 40 to 50 lbs now

I had a feeling we weren't giving enough...

I will get him on a scale. Did you mean 4 months at 40 pounds or 5 months at 40 pounds?? He will be 5 months in 2 days and I don't think he is quite 40 pounds yet. I will have to weigh him though because now I am curious.

I will give him more benadryl though. Is it normal for the hives to last this long?

Thank you Vicky!!

your not giving enough benadryl

the dose is 1mg per 1pound. so he is 35lbs so he should get 1 1/2 benadryl twice a day.

you might want to weigh him, at 4 months he should be about 40lbs. if he is 40lbs you can go up to 50mg of benadryl.

fyi the over the counter benadryl is 25mg per pill.
