My poor Buterz ruptured his anal glands. Is there anything I can do to make him more comfortable? Preparation H? Gold bond powder? How long before oozing stops? It has been three days. Vet says if it doesn't get better we need to 'lance' it? Is that recommended?
My shep only had an anal gland infection. His didn't rupture.
I guess I haven't heard of an actual ruptured gland before. I knew what was wrong with my guy, he licked and licked at his backside, and he scooted his bottom on the ground a lot. I knew it had to be the glands.
I would maybe get a second opinion?

I didn't know they could rupture..
once in a while one of my dogs will leak stink on his own. I didn't realize they could rupture. Thank you for explaining. I learn something new on this board every day.

question
Good question. He was acting funny Saturday night. Sunday morning we awoke to blood and pus all over his butt. Cleaned it up and it just looked like he got bit or cut himself back there (how I don't know). By Sunday night the lesion 'grew' twice the size and more oooze. Monday morning it was four times the size. There was no, well a little odor but not pungent. I thought it was MRSA. Took him to the vet Monday afternoon and she just looked at it and had a diagnosis. Said it was caused by loose stools not excreting the sac material... but he rarely has loose stools.. so Im not sure.

question..
I've never seen this. How does it happen and how do you know it's a ruptured anal sac?

Had this happen to my shep once.
Vet filled the sac with panalog and left it in there for a couple of days. Infection went away on it's own and my boy was fine after that....never had that problem again.

anal sac rupture
Just given Amoxicillin and to clean with hydrogen peroxide. So I should just keep it clean and open and cross my fingers. Just hate seeing him in pain. Thank you.

vet question
I'm surprised the vet give you some panalog to squirt in. I've had another breed need to have her's lanced and the vet sent me home with a tube of panalog ointment with a long pointy tip to squirt in there. We were told not to have it close up too soon, draining is a good thing.
