Our 4 year old Lucy has struggled with problems with anal glands most of her life. We have to go to the Vet every 3 weeks to have her glands emptied, despite her high fiber diet. You can only imagine how expensive this is getting. (VPI pet insurance does not cover for any anal gland issues). When we wait any longer than 3 weeks (say 1 month)Lucy becomes extremely uncomfortable and the glands usually become infected; resulting in additional costs and more discomfort for Lucy. Lucy anal glands are extremely deep and hard to find. We have tried countless times to empty them ourselves but only cause her discomfort as we go probing around. In fact, the vet. technicians can't find them and have a problem expressing them - so the doctor has to do it. While on vacation recently, Lucy had to have them done(after two weeks)- we found a vet and he too was amazed how deep and difficult the expressing was (even his techs couldn't do it). Well, enough is enough (after countless infections and watching her in pain) we are going to have these things taken out. Lucy always seems to be scooting (even after 1 week of empty glands); she is also losing her friendly attitude with other dogs as when another dog smells her bottom too long she will now attempt to take "their heads off". Please...We just want to hear from anyone else out there who may have encountered the same problem with their bully. I am scared to put Lucy under for surgery; but she is healthy and we want her to have these things out before she gets any older. I just want Lucy to be pain free and as much as we love our vet. seeing him every three weeks is getting old and too expensive.
Please share any info you may have on anal gland removal with us. Thanks
Thanks for your feedback - but glands are too deep to reach
Thanks for your feedback but we have tried countless times over the pass four years to express these anal glands ourselves. On two different afternoons, my vet. stayed late and spent over an hour each time (private one on one lessons) trying to teach me how to express these glands myself. After countless trys, we believe my fingers are just not long enough to get so very very deep inside her. Another afternoon, my husband had a private lesson with the Vet. My husband thought he could feel the "small hard kidney shaped bean" inside her but was not able to express the gland. There have been many many times out of desperation (in the middle of the night when Lucy was in pain) my husband and I would get out of bed -put on the gloves and try and try but we just can't seem to find the right spot to express these extremely deep glands.
I have taken Lucy to two different hospitals (after hours...when I felt it was an emergency)and all of these technicians can't seem to find these glands to express them. After several tries...They have to call in the doctor and it usually takes these vets. several tries to finally express them. All doctors have said these glands are the deepest they have ever seen in their practice.
Its only been approximately 10 days since her last expression and she is uncomfortable again. These glands are so deep that they fill up extremely fast.
Lucy's Vet. (who specializes in bull dogs) has referred us to a specialists/surgeon to remove these glands. He said that they are so deep that he does not feel comfortable removing them himself. He said that they are so deep and cannot be removed the normal way. We have an appointment/consultation with the vet. surgeon next week. The sooner these glands are gone the better we all will feel. This operation is probably going to cost us a fortune because we are paying a specialized surgeon rate - but we have no choice...these glands got to go.
God Bless Lucy, she has been through so much with these anal glands. They are painful for her...They are so so deep that she yelps as we try and find them deep inside her...the vet is getting better at it so she doesn't yelp so much when he does it...but when the vet. techs. or we try...its so sad to witness her discomfort. In fact, at her regular doctors (and the emergency room hospital) when they see Lucy coming in for anal gland expression, the vet. techs. now refuse to express them - they call in the doctor.
Just in 2009 alone (seven months) we have spent over a thousand dollars just treating these anal glands. We don't even want to know how much we have spent in total (over the past four years) for these anal glands...between constantly expressing them and antibiotics when they would get infected. Our biggest regret is that we didn't listen to our Vet sooner. He told us about 2 1/2 years ago to have them removed...but we just didn't want Lucy going through the surgery. Now after all this time we have reached a point that we have no choice. Lucy can't live like this anymore...enough is enough.
Again, the sooner they go the better...thank you for your feedback - I will keep you posted.

that must be miserable for her..
And very costly for you. Vets charge way too much for a 30 second procedure. People are willing to pay it because they don't want to stick a finger up their dog's butt, or they worry they will do it wrong. It's really not difficult and you can wear gloves. I paid $27 to have it done one time and then I started doing it myself. Can you imagine the expense of having 5 dogs anals expressed every couple of weeks? No way. I have two dogs that need it done weekly. I just do it in the tub during their bath.

You should make an appointment with the vet to teach you how to do it. Put on a glove and have the vet help you locate where exactly where the anal sacks are and how to express them. You need to do it yourself at the vet's office, so he can help you learn exactly what you are feeling for. The anal sacks are a bit different on every dog, but they don't move around. Once you know where they are you can do it in the comfort of your own home.

anal gland removal
Bubba just had his removed about 4 months ago. He is doing fine. He is 6 years old and has always had a problem. They had to be expressed every few weeks also. My vet taught me how to do it and I did it for about 4 years. Last summer one of them became fibrous almost like it ruptured and then scarred. After that it was difficult to express. Then it got infected. The surgery to remove them was about $950, before that there were a few months of antibiotics and pain meds which added about $400 more. I was afraid as you are to put him through it but he is much better off now.
