So I just talked to the vet about getting Balu allergy tested and it will cost me $485 to get it done!! I was expecting like $300 at the most but $485, does this seem a little expensive or is it usually this much? They said its $135 for the initial visit then $350 for the testing. My vet doesn't do it so I have to bring him to a specialist.
I thinik the cost of the test is right but....
the cost of the office visit is very high. Why? They're just drawing blood...

I was quoted even higher- told I should have a SKIN SCRAPE (?) f
my vet referred me over the phone to a dermatologist who gets $600-$1000 just to see me and do a "skin scrape" BEFORE adding $400 in bloodwork. Crazy. I called my vet back and asked if I could see him (we are due for our annual visit soon anyway) and have him draw the blood for the test. I understand the test can be $300-400 because of lab charges, but I thought a dermatologist's work-up was not necessary right away since most of Simons allergy symptoms are tearing eyes and licking paws, IDCs. Anyone else told they need a skin scrape in addtion or instead of bloodwork?

Re: Allergy Testing
Hi,
I have gone through this and yes it can be very expensive. Partly because you are going to a specialist and they typically are more. I know that for me it made a big difference in my dog. His allergies were environmental, so difficult to control. Once we did the allergy testing and he was on allergy shots we noticed a big improvement. The dog was much more comfortable. He would still have occasional breakouts but the shots made them more tolerable and easier to get under control. In my opinion it is worth spending the money. I wish you good luck with this.
