Finn is licking his paws and scratching like crazy do you think its just allergies or could it be something else? he is on benadryl 25mg twice a day but does not seem to be helping. His face and skin are red. Any advice? I just changed his food vet recommened because he was throwing up a couple of times a day. He said he needed more fiber in his diet and he is now on hills science diet light. Not crazy about that food but the vet said it's fine he has his 2 bulldogs on it and they do great. The red and scratching started before the food.
Re: also doing the grain free diet
I am thinking of switching to the same food for the same reasons (from Royal Canin) but was told by someone that a bulldog should not be on food with higher than 26% to avoid kidney problems. Royal is 26% and the grain free food you are using is 34%.

He was on the canidae all stages and i thought he was doing well on it (some licking) the vet said to change him because he was throwing up and felt that he needed more fiber and said the science diet had the fiber in it. i will have to look for a grain free food. what about wellness food.
my first bulldog was on that for a while. i feel very bad for him licking and scratching plus he wakes me up in middle of night.
thanks for all the info.

Re: Allergies
You might try switching to a different food, a grain free food, one like Natural Balance Fish and Potato. It sounds like your dog may need to be put on a short course of antibiotics since the Benedryl is not working. This is the time of year that most dogs will start to have allergy issues. I say this from experience in having an allergic dog myself. Usually come spring is when they would kick in with all the pollens coming out. You may need to take him to the vet and have them check him. A short course of antibiotics may be all that is needed to get that under control. The benedryl certainly will not hurt and can help the itching. Also, if you use a medicated shampoo to bathe the dog in, that can help. I used Malaseb shampoo, and during allergy season, he got bathed once a week. It helped the itching a lot.

also doing the grain free diet
Dozer had terrible trouble with his paws being inflamed and licking non stop. We changed to Canidae grain free and he is doing great on it. He loves this food.

Oh gosh, I have had the same problem
with my 5 yr old. He stated to get those same symptoms last Septmeber, before that he never had any allergies. I switched his food to Natural Balance and had good results until he was diagnosed with intestinal ulcers a month ag. I too was told to switch him to science which I dont care for either and a few days after i put on that food he was itching like crazy! Chewing his paw, scratching his face, liking the air and his face pink. I took him off that science diet and put him on a food called Merrick. He seems to be ok on that. Natural Balance worked well for allergies, but my vet said that his diet was causing his ulcers that is why I dont use natural balance anymore. Good luck

Agreed...try a grain-free food
I have heard that you need to give a dog a good 90 days on a food trial for allergies, but sometimes you can see a switch much quicker than that.

It could be an allergy to grain.
I switched kibble recently to a grain-free food. My bullie doesn't have allergies but my Boxer was doing the same paw-licking that Finn is doing. I've only had my girls on the grain-free for a little over a week and the paw licking has gone down by at least 50%. I am still in the transition stage from the old food to the new one TOTW Fish/Sweet Potato. My Maggie is doing much better and I hope the new food will completely stop the licking.
My vet told me that when a dog licks his/her paws it is usually allergy related and that more than 90% of the time it is the dog food causing the allergy. Just a thought...does the kibble that you are currently feeding have any grain in it?
