Hello.....this is such a great resource for us bulldog owners!!
I want your opinions on what you guys think may be going on with our 4 week old puppy....
The runt of our litter (she's 2.6 pounds) has always had problems with milk coming out her nose while nursing. She is still having the same problem now that we are weaning them. On Friday she snorted some gruel up her nose apparently (she is very verousous when she eats...even though we are feeding them every 4 hours). Around midnight my husband did the feeding shift....she didn't want to eat, was lethargic, and blew some nasty looking stuff out her nose. We immediately called our WONDERFUL bulldog vet at home and he put her on Amoxicillin, Afrin nose drops, and a vaporizer. We have been feeding her separately from her litter mates so we can control how much/fast she eats. Her appetite is back, she will play, BUT.....she still blows gruel out her nose, and will spit up some, about a half hour after she eats. She also sounds congested...not in her chest, in her nose. We are burping her, using the bulb aspirator, etc....she is still steadily gaining weight, and is not dehydrated.
First.....why is she still blowing milk/gruel out her nose? (The vet checked her palate and it's not a cleft palate). Is this symptoms of an elongated soft palate?
Second...how long does it typically take for this to start clearing up? This is only the second day she's been on the antibiotic. We just feel so sorry for her. And of course I haven't slept a wink the last two days. I've been sleeping on the floor in the room with her.
I thank you in advance for your help.
Thank you Vicki!!
We started making her food thicker yesterday and she is much better. No milk/food blowing
Thank you for taking the time to respond Vicki!!

MAKE IT THICKER
and burp her after she eats, you might have to stop her in the middle of eating and burp her.
I had a puppy like this and we had to put her on thicker food early and make sure she burped, it then stopped

Sorry!
I don't have any experience with a puppy that young. But, if you are concerned that something is wrong, I would take the pup to the Vet.

Anyone?????
She seems much better today. She still occasionally blows "stuff" out her nose, not sure if it's snot, or milk.
Does anyone have any ideas what could be up?
Thanks!!
Amy
