2 yr shots

Lola is due next month for her 2 yr shots.. I have to ask what she is due for but is there any recomendations for what she doesn't need? I know some people here do not do regular shots so I dont want to pay or put lola through something if its not needed..

I think the normal is a heartworm check and something that starts with a B...

can tell me why?

My dog has one. So far no problem? can you tell us what's your reasons?thanks Belen

If you go to dog shows or even a dog park...

your dog should get the kennel cough vaccine at least once a year. Some people who show their dogs have them vaccinated every 6 months.

If you should ever board your dog it will be required.

My own opinions.

I did read the referenced article and I don't agree with it entirely, but I am no "expert". I only give boosters every three years after initial puppy rounds are completed, with the exception of possible bordatella every 6mos if the dog is being kenneled. Since I rarely kenneled my dogs (had sitters come to the house) I didn't give the bordatella vaccine. I also didn't do the corona, lyme or other vaccines beyond the basics of DHLP + Parvo + Rabies...and I stopped everything after 8yrs old except for the Rabies, which I continue as REQUIRED BY LAW. I agree entirely that too many vets over-vaccinate as a source of income. If you live in an area where your dogs may encounter deer or other wildlife on a regular basis, you will want to do a few more than I do (who live in a residential neighborhood and whose dogs do not leave my yard much these days).

This doesn't mean that I think the annual check-up is wrong...on the contrary, I fully endorse having the dog get a yearly wellness exam and periodic blood panel (every few yrs)so that there is a record of health to compare against when dog is not doing well. I also endorse consideration of a dental cleaning at age 5yrs (+/-).

I don't give my dogs the bordatella shot

never have, never will. But, it's your personal choice what to give your dog.

no vaccines after....

their puppy shots....i dont use bord either and both charlie and wilson are in my shop...with other dogs...i also feed raw which helps with their natural defense against viruses....
every 5 years i do my titers to see if they need boosting....i also dont use flea products or heartworm meds....and in 30 years of breeding and training rotties have never had either.....raw fed dogs naturally repel fleas and ticks another benefit of raw feeding....

We actually use a nasal Bordetella every 6 months

because the girls are either at a show or obedience classes and after battling Kennel Cough and thinking we were going to loose one of the girls we'd rather be safe than sorry. It depends on your dogs exposure to others.... Dog parks, Vet clinics, even on walks they can pick it up.

Called the Vet

She is due her yearly heartworm and a bordetella shot. I google the bordetella shot and got mixed reviews.. ANyone else get this shot every 2 yrs?

Dave, call your vet and see what shots he intends to

give. I don't vaccinate my dogs anymore, I'll titer. Mine only get a yearly heartworm check and rabies when dictated because of the law. But, my vet will write a "pass" on the rabies for my older dogs. The clinic has gone to vaccinating only every 3 years to 7 years.

There's lots of info on the internet about over-vaccinating dogs, personally, I believe that its such a money maker for vet clinics that they are hesitant to change protocol. But, since my dog's health is my responsibility, I decided years ago that most vaccines are either just plain unneccessary or that we give them too frequently.

Good luck

Mine get shots when...

We do titers to see if vaccine is needed. Our Winnie had her 2 rounds of distemper/parvo and then never needed parvo again. Distemper she needed at age 9.
