What About Mini-Bulldogs?

Mini Bulldogs for sale .. we've seen the ads. But do they exist? It depends on who you ask. There are people who say this is the breed of dog they produce. They report there is a registry, a club and, depending on whose web site you visit, you can read variations of the breed standard for the Miniature Bulldog. These breeders report they are answering a demand for down-sized Bulldogs, with improved health over the Bulldog already recognized by the AKC. (An appropriate notation due at this point is that there are significant numbers of healthy and long-lived Bulldogs that come from well-planned and responsible breedings. It cannot be emphasized enough ..You can find many perfectly health Bulldogs, but you will hear these mini Bulldog breeders try anything to make a sell. Choose your breeder carefully!!)

The AKC (American Kennel Club) has recognized Miniature Schnauzers, Miniature Dachshunds, Miniature Poodles, and Miniature Bull Terriers as accepted breeds, and has documented pedigrees for them for many generations. The breeders of the Miniature Bulldog have not yet enlisted the involvement of the AKC in the monitoring of their breeding objectives. We would have to rely solely on what these breeders tell us.

We are not yet sure of the genetics that are being used to produce Miniature Bulldogs and consistency appears to be at issue. For example, on one web site, the breeder refers to her first litter as the offspring of a Bulldog male and a female of Bulldog/pug mix. Another breeder will not reveal his formula for creating Miniature Bulldogs, for fear that it will fall into the wrong hands. There is a definite difference in the breed standard presented by each, and one has referred to the other as producing "hybrids", such as the Bulldog/pug cross, rather than a Miniature. One site refers to a money-back provision if the dog is found to be unshowable .. but the question remains, "Where can the public see Miniature Bulldogs shown and judged?" The breeders back yard? or there registry?

The matter is extremely confusing and would be more so to the average citizen who is new to the mechanics of dog registries.
