You are about to become a pet parent. This is one of the most exciting moments in a dog owner’s life. Preparing for your new family member’s arrival may feel overwhelming when you don’t know where to begin. Before welcoming your Bulldog home, you will want to get a variety of things ready so his or her arrival is calm and goes smoothly.

·        Choose a Veterinarian – Contact your local veterinarian offices and animal hospitals and choose the one that you feel is most comfortable, clean and professional. You will be establishing a long term relationship with the veterinarian and you want to choose one that you feel will give your pup the best care throughout his or her lifetime.

·        Puppy Proof Your Home – Whether you live in an apartment or house, you need to puppy proof your home. You will need to do this even if you have adopted an adult Bulldog, since they behave puppy-like their entire lifetime. Remove any toxic plants, small objects that can be choking hazards and anything else you feel your pup might get injured or sick from.

·        Crate and Bedding – All dogs are den animals, this includes Bulldogs. You will want to choose a crate large enough for an adult size Bulldog to standup, turnaround and lie down in easily. Placing a soft blanket a few toys in the crate will help it feel welcoming and safe for your dog. You will also need a soft dog bed for your pup to lounge in during the day or night. There are a variety of styles and colors available. 

·        Food and Bowls – Choose a healthy dog food for your pup based on his or her age, size and health status. If you are not sure, contact the veterinarian office and ask what is the best options for your Bulldog pup. You will also want to provide dog bowls that are large enough for your pup to fit his or her mouth into comfortable. Since Bulldogs have large heads, you may want to get large bowls.

·        Leash, Collar and Identification Tags – Choose a collar and leash for your pup. They come in a variety of colors and styles to add a bit of color to your Bulldog’s life. The identification tag needs to have your dog’s name on it, your cell phone number and any other contact details you wish to provide. The identification tag needs to be attached securely on the collar ring. This will assure if your dog gets lost, he or she will be returned to you.

·        A Place to Call Their Own – Section off a small area of your home with baby gates that is not in the way of everyday life. Place your pup’s new soft bed in the area so he or she knows they have a special place to call their own.

Now that you have all of the necessities prepared for your new arrival, don’t forget the toys. While toys may not seem like a requirement for survival, they are actually essential to the development of your Bulldog. Toys keep your dog’s mind captivated and intrigued. Purchase a variety of toys in the beginning to see which type becomes his or her favorite. Once you learn their preference, purchase more of the same kind.
