relentless biting!!!

14 week old bulldog bitch is fine until she gets told off for misbehaving like pulling out flowers and then turns into a ball of teeth and will not stop biting!! I've tried pinning her down for about 10 seconds but just seems to make it worse. Help!!

You may have to try various stratagies

Try holding her mouth closed and saying, "NO BITE" in a loud and firm voice. Keep doing this (and what you are doing, except do it form more than 10 seconds.) This is mostly a stage and she should calm down a bit as she gets older as long as you keep training her.

Biting puppy

Our trainer does not agree with putting any puppy on its back to establish your control.  She uses positive reinforcement of high value treats after a desired response from your dog, gradually making the treats more and more irregular.  She also follows the "nothing in life is free" philosophy.  This teaches the pup that you are the provider of all good things -- food, shelter, attention, access to the outdoors, toys, treats, etc. -- and these are given to the puppy when YOU decide, not when the pup demands them.

There are many books available detailing positive training methods.  I know it is hard to get past the biting and those sharp puppy teeth can really hurt.  If you can begin some training going, that would be a good start.  Once your puppy loses those puppy teeth, things will improve.

thanks

Hi there thankyou for the reply,  what high value treats do you recommend

The high value treat could pretty much be anything...it depends

on your pup. It could be a piece of hot dog or cheese. When Dooley was in his training classes, he would do anything for peanut butter. One of the dogs loved carrots and bananas. I would try and get her into a puppy training class where she can learn the basics..Off, Sit, Stay. When she starts biting give her a toy to redirect her from biting you.

High value treats

Ours love cheese and as Janis said, little bits of hot dog and peanut butter are quite popular too!  Check out Petco or PetSmart for freeze dried liver.  (Comes in several varieties -- beef, pork, duck, etc.)  Our trainer calls it "puppy crack" and they absolutely love it.

Holding down a bulldog is not

a good statagy. I will only make them more wild.

I went through this with Kofi and tried everything. I never did give her treats for biting, though. The thing that finally worked for me was putting her in time out. Time out should not be in her crate. After saying no bite, I took her to the laundry room. Left her for a couple of minutes, then opened the door without talking to her.

It's a terrible stage. Have you tried a squirt bottle? This was mentioned to me by someone. Holding the mouth shut was also. There may be some videos on the internet showing this procedure.

This too will pass. Hang in there. Bullies are so worth it!

All owners of new puppies

seem to go through this at one time or another. We put pennies in an empty water bottle and each time we were being bitten would rattle the bottle which startled her and she stopped. She is now two and still sometimes a challenge with one thing or another- not biting - and on occasion I still have to say, " Do I need to get the bottle?" and she knows exactly what I mean and she stops. Might be worth a try.

Tucker was a crazy biter as a pup

Some days my hubby would come home and I'd be going crazy because of the nipping. I kept him on a leash(short kitten sized) inside the house all the time to be able to re direct him right away. We used rewards and chew toys to redirect but yes we also held him when he got super nippy. It did work for us the rare time we did it but it's not something I would ever do now. Someone told me to yelp when he nipped but that had no effect. IMO, what works for one bully might not for another. Be patient and consistent and good luck ;)
