I have 3 little Silkie hens and a couple of Silkie roosters. I have been hoping for some chicks this spring, so have let a couple of my hens go broody and sit on nests. So far, no fertilized eggs have been laid, so I let the hens sit for a week or so, then remove the eggs. They find a different location and try again. My chickens roost in my barn so I thought little of one hen nesting herself into a corner of a horse stall. She was perfectly safe, so I let her sit. She was on her nest for a couple of weeks and I decided to go ahead and pull the eggs, clean her nest. I shoo'd her off the nest (she PROTESTED VEHEMENTLY!) and I looked down, ready to see the eggs she was sitting on. Nothing was there. Well, one thing was there that she had been sitting on the whole time....one piece of horse poo. One little piece of poop. That crazy hen, I wonder if she thought she was making great strides in the egg laying business by sitting on a PIECE OF HORSE POO!!!! Seriously! I laughed so hard I had tears squirting out of my eyes!! Silly birds:-)
This is a pic of her before I moved her. Sorry it is bad, I was in a hurry a while back when I took it and didn' let me phone camera focus all the way.

OK, so not the smartest hen in the house
That's hilarious!
No, definitely not the smartest one here!
However, if you look at the flip side, the rooster didn't bother her for two whole weeks!

She is so mad at me!
Today she kept fussing at me. I found a little egg under some hay, maybe she just misplaced it and so sat on the poo!

They are really pretty little things.
I have had other breeds of chickens in this past, but fell into these little Silkies by accident and really love them! I use them for bug control only, they are a riot to watch! I also have Guineas, my favorite. Yesterday something possessed me at Tractor Supply and I bought the last 3 little Bantys they had. Will see how they get along when they are grown!
