Well, this is the third time in Meaty's 5 1/2 years that this has happened....sudden facial edema and redness...SCARY!!! I cannot say this
enough----ALWAYS have Benadryl on hand....ALWAYS have Benadryl !!!! THis is the THIRD time Meaty has developed facial swelling.....and those sweet nostrils were getting close to being occulded.....I have him 50 mg Benadryl then we rushed to the Emergency Vet......they and we of course have NO IDEA what brought it on (bug bite...????), all I know is, our regular vet told us that his bully died within FIVE MINUTES of being bitten by a centipede...!!!!! I know some of you may remember me telling you this story.......
...
And when Meaty had his second episode of severe facial swelling (and was given an Intramuscular injection of Dexamethasone), this verrrry bully-knowledgeable vet sold us an "Emergency Kit" with a syringe of Dexamethasone (and of course, the neeedle was safely covered)....and showed us how to give it in the loose skin of the neck...
...
ANyhoo, that Dexameth has long expired, so tonight I gave him the 50 of Benadryl as we rushed him to the vet. And just as the other 2 times, I stayed next to him, ready to give rescue breathin and/or CPR if needed. This time, it was a different ER clinic, and this vet gave him Solu-Medrol IntraVENOUSLY instead of IM....and then he also added MORE Benadryl in an intraMUSCULAR injection. THe other two times, they didn't give ANY add'; Benadryl since I'd already given 50 mgms by mouth, but whatever......
....
Meaty is FINE now and sleeeeeeping!! Yea, he's had LOTS of Benadryl....poor guy!!! SOooo thankful he's okay!!!!!! Man, I wish we could know WHY this has happened 3 times now....bug bite? sudden allergic reaction to SOMETHING?????....
...
HUGS to everybully!!!!!! :-)

Miss you sweet boy Otie (July 29, 2013)
Man!! How frightening!
I would make sure you have a good dose of Dex available at all times. I have a horse that has severe allergy issues from ant bites, I always have a dose of oral and injectable Dex.
I bet with your boy it is a bug bite. Hope he gets feeling better really fast! How scary for you guys:-(

Thanks for posting
its a good reminder of how quickly things can go badly. We have always kept an antihistimine in the house. Every spring I throw out the old bottle and buy a new one.
Glad that Meaty is back to perfect.
