Losing Hair

Looking for some help. This is my bully Nelly. She's been starting to lose her hair and it's only gotten worse and is currently on both sides. I have had her thyroid tested and tested for mites which both came back negative. It's not a rash or infected and she isn't bothered by it or scratches or is itchy. I switched her to grain free food earlier this year but hasn't done the trick. A dog dermatologist also suggested for her to take melatonin (with out being seen) and that hasn't worked either. I am hoping one or some of you have had this issue and was wondering what helped your bully as it's breaking my heart she nelly_0.jpgis losing her beautiful coat frown emoticon thank you in advance!nelly_1_0.jpgnelly_1_0.jpg

That looks like Seasonal Flank Alopecia.

While my girl does not have that, there are several owners on here who deal with this issue. I know one or more will answer this...give them time to see it. Good luck! I know many here have very successfully treated it with good results.

Yes it's SFA

Yes that's seasonal flank alopecia. My boy tucker gets this every year in the spring.  It's basically from a lack of sun and vitamin d. We give Tucker Melatonin(adult kind) at the first sign of hair loss. It really works well. If your vet knows the breed he/she should know about this. It is very common and very treatable. Tucker stays on his melatonin until the summer so about 3 or 4 months. Good luck.

SFA

The good news is, the pup doesn't have any pain or itching...it's purely cosmetic.  Be patient with the melatonin...it takes a while to work.  Next year, start giving it about a month before the symptoms started this year.
