Licking the air

So I know this has been posted about before but I can't remember what everyone's thoughts were. Tucker randomly once in a while licks the air. He did it for like 20 min last night in bed. Does anyone have any thoughts on why he may be doing this? It's weird. Thanks ;)

Tail issue?

Does he have a tight tail that may need some cleaning?

I suppose that could be it.

He does have a scab on his head(he scratched his head but we aren't sure how) and when I clean it or put cream on it he licks. Could it be that he wants to scratch his head and he can't? If it's his tail does he lick because he can't scratch/itch it?

In the past when it's been his tail

He's scooted around itching it. Hmm. Thanks for your ideas.

Belly rubs  to Zimmer ;)

I am no expert but...

am wondering if it is something like the ideopathic head tremors some dogs get. Just a rather unexplainable occurrence that some dogs experience.

I guess

It could just be OCD behaviour. It doesn't happen often so I'm not worried about it. If it gets more frequent then I will decide what to do. When hubby gets home we will clean Tucker's tail pocket and then go from there. He's with his dog sitter this wknd and I will ask her Sunday if he did it on the wknd.

Chester does this too...

although he's not doing it much anymore.  It's similar to 'fly biting' where they snap at something invisible in the air.  I have heard that it could be some kind of minimal seizure activity, 99% of the time totally harmless.  I usually try to snap him out of it with a treat or even ringing the doorbell to get his attention.  He seems to have grown out of it though thru the years.  It could also be something as easy as a tail pocket or anal glands also.

Air licking could be a lot of things

I have this with Loulou. When I first brought her home she drove me crazy with Air Licking went to the vet and they said it was fleas. OK got rid of them. Now Loulou will Air lick when I clean under her rope. She hate for me to put anything under that rope. I never had a problem with her tail so can't offer you anything on that. I would check under the her Nose rope maybe that's why she could be airlicking.
