new puppies/crate training

Hi there this is a non bulldog question but my mom is getting two bullmastiff puppies on monday and we were wondering about crate training. right now they are used to being with there brothers and sisters in a large play pin, but she is wanting to potentally crate train them. Should she get two crates? one larger crate they could both fit in? If she does get two crates, place them side by side?gosh, how do you go about trainging two puppies at once?

thanks

I had two English mastiffs

I had two English mastiffs that were litter mates and I put them together in one extra large crate. It worked out great!

They need to learn independence

What if she can't take both of them at once some time. They should learn how to be alone without the other. So I would never crate 2 together. Also I like to put a toy or bone in with puppies so they have something to do, that is a potential fight just waiting to happen if they are both together.

2 crates together, sometimes apart min different rooms or different levels of the home. They should learn to walk alone with out the other while the other stays home.

Separation anxiety is a pain in the u know what.

I have always taken puppies on errands by themselves so they learn to travel without another dog.

I never found it to be an issue and my sister currently is crating her two dogs together in a huge crate and is not having a problem either. I think it's a matter of preference and what works best for your situation. If I ever have two puppies at the same time again I would do it exactly the same.

she ended up carting them separately.. next question

we also ended up getting one of the littler mates and are starting the crating training process. My question is more about how to acclimate the new pup with our 2 yr old english bulldog. They seem to be getting along great but of course want to play and our bulldog is obviously stronger than the little pup but we are keeping them seperated as much as possible. This is the first time we have had two dogs and both dogs are male. In the few days we have had them they both randomly will sniff or lick eachothers genitals( this is how they get to learn eachother?). And have repeadidly tried to mount eachother(establishing pack order?). just wondering if this behavior is safe or normal and to what extent we should let it occur?

Males

I would let them play as much as possible, but your older dog needs to have time with out the puppy, because puppy can be non-stop chewing. The older one should teach the puppy limits. Is the older one neutered? If not he needs to be. 2 intact males in a home is just asking for future problems. Normal male things, like humping, marking, etc. After the puppy matures the older male will likely be less tolerant, so I never have 2 intact males in my home. At least 1 must be neutered.

I do not allow humping, highly discourage that behavior. I find it offensive in my house and expect my dogs to behave in a certain manner. Humping is for breeding IMO, not establishing pack order. I also do not allow them to lick each other, disgusting....ewwww.

Distract them, then a quiet command like "No Lick" and offer a substitute toy or chew. Be consistent.

I establish order in my house. The dogs are next in line.

thank you

thank you for the advice, we have been discouraging that behavior but I wasn't sure sure how much of it was normal. We are on day 3 of them being together and that activity has subsided quite a bit, thank goodness!

Pretty Normal

just doesn't have to be :)

Ester is the only one in my house that is a humper....and that is only when she is in season. She thinks MacKenzie is pretty cute then. :(
