Meaty's gnawed paw pad / Daphne's torn ACL.....

Hi everybully!   I'd love and appreciate any info/ advice, etc. for two issues!

MEATY---He USED to have horrrrible interdigital cysts and HORRIBLE, chronic ear infections.....We would soak his sweet paws

in warm water & Epsom salts, which is great----but he HATES IT----Hubbs & I try EVERYTHING to hold him at LEAST ten minutes

each soak, but honestly----his max is about 5 minutes---but at LEAST it's something .   Since we changed his (and Sophie's) kibble & treats

to fish-based, grain-free, his paws have been GREAT, and his ears, too!  We also started using Ketoconzole-EDTA-Tris  Flush once a week, and that  stuff is a MIRACLE!!!  Poor baby hasn't had one of his yeasty, painful ear infections in a lonnnng time!!!  (Even tho our OTHER vet says "the ears need

to be DRY....no liquids!!!)....,,,but since our new vet Rx'd the KET flush, he's great!...

.....

....I wanted to give background on his allergy problems, but now he has a NEW one....Licking ONE of his pads sooo incessantly, the

the connective tissue is showing each tiny fiber....We of course are concerned that one paw pad might be damaged permanently, so off

to the vet we went. Seasonal allergy---most likely, andnnnd just as in the past with his ears, as soon as Fall hits, he gets better! I also read POLLEN is probably the culprit!  ANYWAYYYY,  the vet did a culture and luckily, no infection!  I asked if we should get a collar, but the vet said no, with this oral cortisone, the licking would stop.  Sadly, it hasn't!!!  The TOP of his paw is now getting a bit raw because of the way he holds his paw to lick the bottom..... So after all THAT, anybully have any experience/ tips?  He has GOT to be miserable!!   We're doing the Epsom salt soaks for this, too....

.....

....

Now onto our precious foster Daphne.....She's awaiting ACL surgery, so she's on crate rest and leash walking for potty. She LOVESSS to

run around the yard and chase squirrels when she potties----obviousy, that CAN'T happen anymore!   What's really distressing is that there

are days she doesn't urinate for wayyyy longer than is healthy---!!! I've talked to my rescue peeps about it, especially the day she went SEVENTEEN HOURS without urinating, even tho her water intake is good!!!  I needed to know at what point do I take her to the vet, etc!!   My rescue peeps who know wayyyy more about this than I do said that it's NORMAL for them to "rebel" by not pottying on leash....some said it's that typical bulldog stubborness...."I can't chase squirrels, so I'm NOT gonna potty!"   ....WhatEVER the reason, I need more tips, because I don't want her having kidney/ bladder issues on TOP of her ACL pain (poor baby!!!)  ...

...

Andddd, I hafta be honest....there are times we DO let her off leash because wellllll......17 hours is wayyyy too long for her to hold her urine. I feel like we are terrible parents---When we let her off leash, she happily chases the squirrels and/or RUNS to the far part of the yard to her fave poo location, and I know it's making the ACL worse....

....

Anybully with tips on this----please share!!!!  Once she finally has the surgery, I know we can NOT let her run or walk far to potty....I'm so

worried she'll have kidney / bladder/ bowel issues if she's unwilling to go.....THANK YOU!!!!  ((( HUGS )))

We went through the acl repair with Chester and..

you are right, it's absolutely imperative that they not use the leg for 6 to 8 weeks.  We kept Chester in an exercise pen with his big pillow and some toys.  Hubby carried him the first few days and then we used a leash.  Maybe if you get her used to the leash with some great treats when she goes?  Does she know the "P" word?  We taught all our guys to "go pee" and as soon as I say it, they all go.

If Meaty's pads are looking frayed, you can use Kerasol, it's in the drug store under foot care.  We use it for Newman and it really helps his pads.  Not much you can do for the allergies that are causing it though, he could be allergic to grass or something in the yard.

Thank you, Kathy!!! How did Chester recover? And....

I reallllly appreciate all the help----thank you!  We've tried treats for pottying, but she will NOT go sometimes......Today, it was

SOOO very long until she FINALLY went!!! I also had to leave the house, and since she would NOT go potty when I took

her outside a few times, I had no choice but to leave potty pads....And actually, I like that they don't require her to walk except a few

STEPS----(we have her in an exercise pen, with a crate attached----she LOVES the crate---thank God!  The exercise pen is

PERFECT so that she can get to her food and water freely, and of course ---NOT walk around the house!!!)  Anyhoooo, I was gone

about 2 hours and was SURE she'd use the pads, but she didn't....I KNOW her bladder had to be OVERLY full---poor baby!!!  Whoever

potty trained her did a GREAT job!!! (did I mention she's our foster baby?) ..

....

I'd love to try the Kerasol, BUT...we have several wonder-bull paw protectant / soothing things that PROBABLY work well, the

problem is, he licks it all off immediately  :-(  Luckily, the paw waxes we have are SAFE for them to lick.....Does Newman lick

the Kerasol off immediately? In the past, I've tried putting SOCKS on over the wax, but---FORGET IT---LOL!  They're off

immediately, too!!!!  If ONLY he'd let the stuff sink into his cute paws and keep the socks on like Mommy does to keep her feet soft...LOL!

Chester's leg is great..

he walks without a limp and does all the things he used to, mostly sleep, but no pain and he has his moments of zoomies.

Newman will try to lick the kerasol off.  We try to distract him, keep him laying down for a few minutes and pet him.  We've also done the baby socks and used a piece of duct tape around the top to keep them on a little longer.  Ultimately though, he does lick.

ArchimedesMommy's picture

awww.....zoomies...LOVE that word!!! :-) May I ask you ONE more

question??  When the duct tape has to be removed, doesn't it stick to his fur?  I guess I could try that,

and after an hour or so, saturate with water to get it loose ?   THANK YOU for all your help!  I'm so

happy Chester healed well---!!!  :-)

It's been a while since we've done it but...

I don't remember having trouble getting the tape off.  You just have to wrap one layer or you could put it on the sock part if it's long enough just to make it a little tighter and reinforce it.  I always buy the baby socks at Walmart, they seem to fit tighter.

Thank you!!!!! (( hugs!!)) NM

can I ask what kind of dog food you feed Meaty?

Gracie is on a grain free limited ingredient lamb kibble, and she is so yeasty, now licking her paws, her ears are yeasty, her eyes are watery, she starting to scoot again.  Im taking her to the ver tomorrow, the last time I was there she said to switch to a fish based dog food.  It sounds like meaty is doing well with this.  Im wondering what brand you use?

Thanks!

Kathy Chester Newman and Jessa's picture

We have our guys on...

Earthborn Holistic Coastal which is salmon based.  They are all doing great on it.  Lamb can cause problems as well as chicken.

ArchimedesMommy's picture

Natural Balance LIMITED INGREDIENT salmon & sweet potato has

been wonder-bull for both Meaty and Sophie!   Our Rescue uses the one Kathy Ollie Chester mentioned....Earthborne

Holisitc Salmon---also a great kibble!  :-)   Hope Gracie gets better soon-----Meaty's skin/ ear issues usually clear

up as SOON as it gets cool outside again----just ONE MORE reason I HATE summer!!!!  :-(
