How safe is Benedryl on a daily basis?

Hey everyone!  Hope you are surviving the summer heat across the Mainland US!  So its been a while since I posted, but I have a question:  James' face swells up sometimes, presumably its an allergy.  When it does, the eye swells, causing the entropian to act up, causing him to scratch, causing....well you know how that goes after ulcer #3 and a ridiculous amount of money.  Benedryl keeps this under sontrol- even just one dose a day.  How safe (or unsafe) is this?  Any experience with this?  Your replies are greatly appreciated!

Benedryl

Our vet has us use benedryl on a daily basis for the dogs we have who are bothered by pollen, etc. during the spring and summer months.  We have had a couple who were on it year round for 10 years without a problem.   It is relatively safe and definitely a lot cheaper and less painful then treating corneal ulcers.

We are on daily Benadryl too,

We are on daily Benadryl too, and that was something I asked my vet.   I wanted to know if it would make her sleepy.   The vet said that it does for a few weeks, but after that dogs adjust to it very well, and it shouldn't impact them after that.   For me, it's much better than listening to a rattling chest and being fearful all the time!    Hopefully the next season will be easier.... hers is seasonal allergies.

Yes! Much better than the alternative!

Thanks!
