How to increase milk production in lactating Bitch?

Day 6  with Pups and I need advice on increasing the milk supply of my bitch.   We are down to 3 hour feedings as of 2 feedings ago.  No fever. Eating small amounts of top quality (switched to puppy Kibble (from Vet, HILL'S HEALTHY ADVANTAGE)) yesterday with canned food.  Prior to this was on Solid Gold Wee Bits.  She has copious amounts of clean water at all times, not out in the heat, resting in quiet surroundings.

Any tips???  anyone tried the Motilium (Domperidaone) to increase milk supply?  Love to hear any advice.

Most Sincerely, Thank you!

not familiar with what you asked about, but

several years ago I had a new momma that wasn't happy to lay down and let the pups nurse and asked my Vet for advise (she raises and shows Frenchies and Whippets). She said to give the momma Reglan to settle her down and that one of the side affects of Reglan was assisting with milk letdown. Ask your Vet.

Other things you might try is to feed her the canned Vet diet AD, it's made for sick and recuperating dogs and is very calorie dense. I always make my new moms chicken livers sauteed in butter for the first few days to jump-start their appetites and have made cheddar cheese and chicken liver omelets for them too. I've heard from large breed people that they boil down a whole turkey and give the rich broth instead of water to boost calorie and fat intake.

Milk....

Do a search here for Mom's pudding that a lot of breeders give lactating moms.  I use raw blend food and alternate with rice pudding and cottage cheese until weaning.  Are the puppies hungry and not gaining?  Maybe you have to supplement with a bottle--goat milk is fine to top off after nursing and maybe the mom needs to get a calcium supplement after nursing.  In my opinion the Solid Gold food was probably better for her than the Hills.  Good luck.

fenugreek is supposed to really help

The canine repro group I subscribe to recommends adding fenugreek to the moms diet.  You start out with a couple of capsules and increase daily until she smells like maple syrup!

It is available at health food stores and perhaps at your local pharmacy.

Fenugreek (Trigonella foenum-graecum). Fenugreek seed has been used to increase milk production since biblical times. The herb contains phytoestrogens, which are plant chemicals similar to the female sex hormone estrogen. A key compound, diosgenin, has been shown experimentally to increase milk flow.(0)

Good luck!
