Smelly, oily coat and a lot of shedding

Hey all, I have a 3 year-old bully named Reggie and, just like the message title says, he has a very smelly, oily coat and sheds everywhere...He had a history of mange but i really do not think this is the problem...When i pet him for one second my hand stinks and has hair all over it, and my apt smells as well. I will give him a bath with selson blue and he will smell great and have a nice, soft coat, but two days later he is back to stinking!!! I want to have him up on the couch with me all the time but i can't because of these problems!!! Please help!!! Thx!!!

Yes, I think testing should give you answers.

There is one more test I would ask that you talk to the vet about...and that's thyroid. Read this website and in fact, you may want to do this testing before the allergy test.

Calm Coat can help!

We have a great product called Healthy Skin & Coat Shed Relief. It is a Omega 3 Fish Oil Liquid that you add to your bullies food. It helps to condition the coat as well as prevent & lessen shedding. I have a terrier that uses this all the time & she hardly ever sheds anymore! I would also recommend the Calm Coat Aloe Oatmeal Shampoo and the All Natural Topical Spray to help stop ithching, soothe rashes or skin conditions, soothes insect bites, and lessens allergy symptoms.

Thanks for the quick reply!!

Per vet's orders, he's actually been on the royal canine vd potato and duck formula for a long time now, plus i NEVER give him any other kind of food, so i don't think the food is the problem...although, do you think the duck instead of fish could be a major problem?? i think you are right about the allergy testing though, as that's something i've heard about but have never done. the vet has given me a bunch of different shampoos beside the selson blue recommendation, so i don't think that is the problem either. You shouldn't have bathe a dog that often anyway, right? ah, i don't know...i think he needs the allergy testing though and i think that is the next immediate step for him.

Allergy testing is expensive but that is the best way

to determine what his problem can be...it certainly is suspicious for some food allergy. What are you feeding him now? Is this dog a 'picky eater'?? If you don't have the couple hundred dollars for the allergy testing, you can do some experimentation on your own. I'd start with something like a fish & potato food...with no other protein sources (no other meats or fowl) and no other grains/starches (no rice, wheat, corn, etc). If you give him this type kibble it should be for at least four weeks because it takes several weeks for the change to occur in his digestive system (unless he vomits this food) and the more economical way to buy it would be in a 20lb bag which should be enough for one month. Do NOT give any other treats except fish or potato...some have taken frozen TaterTots and baked them on a cookie sheet until crisp, and used them for treats.

As for the bathing, I don't think this is the best shampoo to be using for the dog. It won't "hurt him" but it can be too drying and that may be part of the reason for the fur loss. I'd really recommend one of the canine antibacterial shampoos like Malaseb or Chlorhexidine. You lather up the dog well and leave the shampoo on the dog for 10 minutes before rinsing well...then rinse again to be sure you got all the soap out. You can do this 1-2xweek for a couple weeks together with a dietary change and see if that brings him back to 'normal' coat.
You might also consider giving him a daily fish oil capsule to add lustre and health to his fur...the ones at Costco or WalMart are fine. It has to be uncomfortable for the dog as well as for you, to have him stinky and shedding. Best wishes and give it a little time to work. happy.gif
