Prescription bland diet

Sorry for the long post...

Has anyone had success with the prescriptions Hills bland diet you get from the vet? I'm thinking of asking the vet to put Tuffy on this because his loose poop has turned into diarrhea. He was doing well on the new food but then I changed him over 100% after about a week and it went south. I think the combo of transitioning him too quickly, giving him one too many treats and him getting into some nasty sticks/leaves outside didn't do him any favors. I have heard that a home bland food remedy is better but my schedule is crazy, I'm not big on cooking and to be honest Tuffy kind of turned his nose up to the white rice I offered him tonight. I had to add some low sodium chicken broth to even get him to eat it. (I didn't mix it with boiled hamburger or bland chicken because I read for day one you can just give white rice to try to bind him.) It was eiother give him rice or starve him for 24 hours which I don't have the heart to do since it's only a few instances of diarrea not an all day thing. I'm dropping a stool sample off to the vet tomorrow to get it checked out so I was wondering if I should ask for the prescription bland diet while I'm there...

The plus side plus side is tht Tuffy is as happy and active as ever so his tummy troubles aren't even phasing him...

you can get by cheaper by going with a lesser quality food

that is full of fillers and corn to bind the dog up.

I have a big problem with vets who sell products because they are told they are better when they dont do the research as to what is in the food.

I hate detail people, i work in medicine and they try and shove free samples down our throats to wite for a product. We dont see them, as all it does is make the RX more for the private pay people.

I would have stool samples done to find out why or if the dog has an infection. Then go from their with the food, and adding probio's

Vicki, I totally agree the ingredients are crap but...

we only used it for the short term for upset stomach and occasionally when Oscar was on chemo.

Tuffy is approx. 5 months old

Thanks for the feeding guidelines..I currently give his 3 cups of kibble a day. I will definitely looking into an adult als food once this bag is done if he doesn't improve. The good news is he had firm poop all day today. I just gave him straight kibble (3 cups spread throughout the day) and he's on this diabac anti-diarrea supplement that my breeder swears by. There's something to this stuff because this is the first time he hasn't had soft poop by mid day. I'm just afraid that once the diabac leaves his system he'll go back to his normal loose stools...

Question regarding how much to feed...

Thanks for the suggestions, Vicky...I have a calorie question. The Wellness Large Breed Puppy says give 3 to 3-1/4 cups a day. Since this is a large breed formula it has 20% less fat and calories and only has 360 calories per cup. Would he really have enough calories to flourish on with only 2 cups a day? We're talking about only 720 calories per day. As a comparison, his former food was C. Natural Lamb and rice puppy formula which had a whopping 540 calories per cup. Major difference!

I think you are right about what is upsetting his tummy...

though I doubt it is the feed, I would bet money on the treats! If you are already having stool issues, cut out every single thing but JUST his dry kibble. No treats, no extras, nothing. Just kibble for a while. What did you switch him from/to? It may take a little bit to firm him up, but keep an eye on everything that goes in his mouth. Obviously he has ingested something that messed him up, but like I said, I doubt it is the feed. Don't do another feed change, you have done several already, haven't you? It is most likely what is causing all the issues to begin with. Slow it down, feed him one product for at least 6 weeks to see if he can tolerate it. If then he is still having issues, try another brand or variety. Sounds like he is getting too many changes in too short a time frame.

excellent food..

I have used it in the past and great results..
worked really well

never use white rice.....

white rice is a processed rice you should only use reg brown rice....not that the white rice casued his loose stools....
the bland diet is mostly rice any ways....you can cook up a batch of brown rice for a week....and add in some boiled chicken...you can pre make a weeks worth of food on a sunday if possible...
hope this helps a little....

When I feed the canned i/d...

I do not feed any other nibbles, treats, or bites of anything else.

I use white rice, just not instant..

Actually what I use is Hills Prescription i/d canned and Flagyl for 5 to 7 days.

Well, at least put him on adult food after that bag is done!

Sorry, I forgot you said you bought the big bag!

Also, as Vicky stated.....

Don't go with the amount recommended on the bag. How old is your boy? With Sophia, I fed her 1 cup three times a day until she was about 6 or 7 months old, then brought her down to 1 1/4 cup twice a day. As an adult she gets one cup twice daily at 12 hour intervals. She gets a tablespoon of yogurt on her dinner meal everyday. No other treats. No people food. Nothing:-) She doesn't need it....and it makes her gassy and have bad poops if she diverts from her normal intake.

Hey Girl, put him on an adult feed.

Puppy food is generally too rich for them! It won't hurt one ounce to put him right on a good adult feed. Try a Wellness Adult if you want, or if you are game, go ahead and switch him right now to Natural Balance...they have many varieties that would work for you.

Best wishes....let me know if you need anything else. Also, Wellness, in my experience, has produced normal stool. Not all dogs have soft stool on it:-) But not all dogs do well on it either:-)

soft poos are about the norm with Wellness

as the food doesnt have all the fillers in it to bind them up.

Dont feed what is on the bag, feed much much less. When i feed my puppies they got 1c twice a day. and as an adult it was 1 to 1/2 c daily

white rice.....

is a processed rice which is bleached.....brown rice has not been treated....most vets will just give the old white rice and hamburger talk...
first if you do hamburger you should boil the burger and drain ..... dont use minute rice in either brown or white to many chemicals involved....takes a bit longer but use long grain if possible....
the less processed food going thru the tummy the better you will be....
if you have taken a stool sample in and its neg.....but he is still having loose poop....stop every thing your doing....and start from scratch....
do a bland diet brown rice and burger (low fat) or boiled chicken..... no veggies no cookie no anything for a week,,,,best if its two weeks.....then in those two weeks decided what your going to feed and what brand.....pick it and stay with it no matter what....
if your going to feed kibble go with the california natural herring and sweet potaote....thats it...dont change dont add anything....for two months just that (i think they make snacks he could have)
but you need to pick a path and walk down it....your going to end up with a fussy eater who has loose stools all the time if you cant find a food either of you like.....

You are totally right, Amy!

I am a bad Bully Mommy. I've been giving this poor pup too much and switched his food up too many times because I was getting so frustrated with the neverending soft stool. No more treats or goodies until his tummy is better. He is currently on Wellness Large Breed Puppy. They only had a large bag so he'll be on the stuff for at least 6 weeks. If that doesn't work I'm going to consider a lower end food like Purina Pro Plan (which my cocker thrived on.) The holistic foods might be too rich for his sensitive tummy. But no changes for at least 6 weeks!

Thanks, Judy. I'll keep that in mind. Question about brown rice

I've read both--use white and use brown. Some articles say that brown rice causes fiber and will cause him to go more and that white rice is so binding. It's so confusing.... I'm currently giving Tuffy some diabac, which my breeder recommended to help with diarrea and lose stools. I also have a stool sample a the vet. Today so far the poop is firm but that's probably from the diabac

We've used the HIlls W/D formula in the past and...

it worked really well. Cleared up the runs in no time. Try adding a little pumpkin to it. Our guys loved the taste too.
