not so funny raw story

So I have been feeding raw for about a month with no issues.
And have really valued all the advice I have received here.
I heard many times that feeding bone un ground was ok, Stella had some issues so I stated chopping the bone up into smaller pieces.
Well, Stella had been backed up for over a week, I called my vet and he thought it might be the antibiotics we had her on for a stomach bug.
so he told me to take her off the meds, give her some mineral oil by mouth and an enema as well.
We did all that and still nothing. So I donned my latex gloves dipped my finger in some vaseline and went in.
Lo and behold after breaking up some of the matter I found a sharp hard object. I tried to get it out, and sadly cut her bottom in the process, she started bleeding and I felt horrible.
What was the issue? a sharp piece of bone!
I will no longer feed my dog raw bone ever.
I will still feed raw, but will buy it pre ground or will grind it myself.

needless to say we had some really runny poo at our house, that was all over the place and poor Stella was a real trooper, I am so sad and exhausted as we spent over 4 hours trying to help her get everything out and cleaning the house.

Hi Tammy

I chopped up chicken with a cleaver because when I gave it to her whole she barfed the whole thing back up.

Oh and, don't know if anyone saw my post from

Audrey's first year checkup, but she is missing EIGHT teeth! WTH?!? It's no wonder she can't chew the bones and gags on them! 8 freakin teeth missing? I am SO unhappy about that!

poor girl!

I don't feed bone everyday, it's more like a few times a week. Right now is 'bone time' because my husband found chicken quarters on sale. He chops them with a cleaver. They get half boneless pork and half chopped chicken . I have been giving them eggs too, OMG Audrey and Princess go CRAZY over their eggs!SO far all 3 of my dogs are doing very well on it!

Just curious

What type of bone do you "cut up" and how did you cut it? I'm wondering if the cutting left a sharp chunk, teeth chewing would leave a more ground/dull bone fragment. I've never ground, cut or manipulated the bones in any of Teela's food. She has been eating raw since 10 weeks old, I've never had an issue. She eats ALL bones, including sharp fish bones. Sorry to hear about your experience.

its all trial and error.....

i have done things and then droped them....or i fed this but didnt like it....feeding raw is simple but as you go along you will ]your going to adjust to what you like...
just dont give up....your not alone....i my self have pulled bone from rear ends when i ever first started....
i give my bone separte...i dont add it to their meal i give them lamb ribs a couple a week some times more....if their poop turns white i back off....i dont add my 10% to their meal....
as i use pig feet, lamb ribs, aborted lamb legs, i got alot of deer bone....

Thanks so much

I appreciate the input, I think i was feeding her too much bone.
will back off a little.

Yes, I too grind my bone or use prepackaged raw....

Twister & Dixie eat raw meaty bones for their teeth, but those are large deer femur bones, so no worries

I use chicken neck and grind them myself and then add them to another protein like turkey heart or ground turkey/chicken...and they also get bone in the Nature's Variety patties or Blueridge rolls I buy.

I learned very quickly bone is a tricky thing...you can sure bind your dog up fast with too much, so I usually just feed it in the evening and not twice a day - like Judy said it's only 10% of their total meal, so a very small portion. If I notice either of them having a hard time, I lay off bone and add liver or canned, something to get them soften again

i would....

gind all your bones till your back feeling comfortable.....first i am very old fashioned and alway grind my bird bone..... but when you get back to wanting to feed bone use lamb ribs and dont chop them when your ready of course.....small pcs can be as deadly as cooked...also its only 10% of your meal which is a very small part of your diet....
glad all came out well.....
dont be discouraged and have fun.....you can use whole egg and grind the shell for calcium needs....for now...

Thanks!

I definitely belive in raw.. just not the bone part.
I think she is feeling better today..

Poor lil thing

she must have been so uncomfortable. I could never do the raw feeding - I have a thing about raw meat.

Glad you got it out and sorry to hear that happened. =(
