my dog is addicted to water....please help....

otis is 5 months old and drinks water until there's nothing left in the bowl. he usually won't leave any of it, but if he does, he'll walk away and return almost instantly to drink more. sometimes he drinks so much he vomits, and then returns to fill himself up again. i've actually had to limit his water intake for fear of him making himself sick. i would love to be able to put down a bowl of fresh water and know it will last more than 5-10 minutes at a time without having to refill constantly. what do i do?

I never withhold water but I would bring this to the vets attention immediately.

I wouldn't limit his water either...get him vet-checked!

Diabetes is one of the diseases that have this type behavior. ???

I agree with taking to the vet....

I would go to the vet and maybe do some blood workup. One of my females would drink and drink and drink. What I didn't know was she was going through kidney failure. Drinking lots of water was a result of her trying to rehydrate herself and it would kick start her kidneys. One thing I did notice was her breath smelled like chemicals and her appetite decreased. Let us know how everything goes.

He may be diabetic i would get it checked out also I wouldnt limit his water intake

Vet

Just to check there is no medical reason why he is drinking lots.
If there is no medical reason its a behaviour issue and I have absolutley no idea what to do about that LOL but i'm sure Lynn K would point you in the right direction of a good trainer.

In my opinion i would...

take him to the vet and make sure there isn't something medically wrong and if you already did that then I guess I am no help sorry.

Limit his water if he finishes a bowl don't fill it untill he is fed again. But be smart about it, if your dog is playing rough or it is very warm then give him water. but under normal circumstances limit.

Thank you all for your responses...

He has been vet checked for heart murmers (none) and the only medication he is presently on is Neobacimyx-H eye ointment for his "cherry eye" and of course his Interceptor. He is scheduled for eye surgery this thursday and I will be sure to talk to my vet about the excessive drinking and bringing up the subject of diabetes being a possibility. I will keep you updated on what I find out. Thanks again to all. ~Melody

another thought

I have a young pup that also drinks more that the normal amount of water....and pees like a race horse too. He has a heart murmur that makes him retain fluid and he is trying to rehydrate his body to make up for the retention.
Please take your dog into the Vet (if you haven't done so yet) to be checked for any medical issues, catch what might be the cause early, rather than too late.

Is the pup on any kind of medication like...

prednisone? This will make a dog very thirsty.
