Momma questions...

Hello Everyone!

The babies seem to be doing great, getting little round bellys! I am concerned about Boston though, for the last couple days she has been panting a lot and even breathing quickly when sleeping. She also has pretty knarly diarrhea. I have been feeding her puppy food and cottage cheese, is that possibly why?

The pups are 4 days old now, should I keep feeding them every 2-2.5 hours, or start extending the time between feedings? Also is it crucial to supplement with Esbilac, because some of them HATE the bottle! happy.gif

Thanks for all your help!

Jeremy

Agree that mama can be panting from the milk or the surgery

and to help her pass gas or just feel a bit better, encourage her to get up and walk around a little when she's not nursing. I know her breasts are heavy now and this may not be totally comfortable for her, but she does need to move around a bit...maybe slip a loose leash on her and take her for a walk around the back yard once, or around the house if its too cold outside...and remember to carefully wipe down her paws and breasts before letting her nurse the next time. Is she eating the puppy kibble? If she doesn't like it, try mixing it half/half with her other food but the higher calorie stuff should help her with milk production. Are you dividing the cottage cheese into two feedings, two heaping Tbsp in AM and PM should be quite enough...some dogs do get diarrhea from any type of dairy product...hope that isn't your dog.

Also meant to mention "discharge" which many bitches have even tho they have delivered by C-section. Its dark and tar-like, coming from the vulva, and it should be cleaned up so the pups don't get into it. Is this what you're seeing and believing it to be diarrhea? This discharge can go on for 1-2 weeks and as long as its very dark (not red blood) its quite normal. It can also get a bit stinky...another reason to keep mama clean. happy.gif

i dont bottle feed unless mom has no milk.

if they are nursing on mom and getting fat and gaining wt your good. potty, burp and put back to bed for 3 hours, unless they are small then its 2.5hrs.

When they double the birth wt about 2 weeks then you can let them go 5-6 hrs at night but continue to feed every 3-4 hours during the day.

Momma's pant when the milk comes down, she might still also be in a bit of pain from the section which they will pant with too.

Everything sounds good!!!
