Delivery with possible water babies...

I have a female who will have pups on the 30th of this month and is showing the signs that she might have water filled pup/s (blister type nipples). I'm giving her folic acid twice a day and since she has the head shakes on and off I give her calcium also. Any other suggestions on what I can do now until she delivers to make things easier for her?
Thanks,
J

Folow up....

Well had labs done and everything is normal. Stopped all supplemments Calcium and folic acid and no more shakes. Nipples look the same and no edema anywhere on her body. I'm at a loss of words with the whole nipple situation (blister looking). Her weight is good so I think we're just going to leave it in Gods hands and see what happens 10 days from now when she whelps. Thanks for the suggestions.

Javier

Thanks.

Elaine, Thanks. You are one of the ones I've gotten good info from. I don't take things personal on here but I feel others do and I just appreciate the info. Vet has started our girl on lassix once a day. Our other litters did well and I guess this one caught us off guard. We have our fingers crossed.

Javier

I agree....

believe me I'm not saying the info given by you all is not appreciated. I am going to try some of the suggestions given until I get more info from labs and the Ultrasound. I wirte on here to get info and bounce info back with my experiences.

My bullies are just not regular dogs to us, so though a healthy litter is fine a live healthy momma after giving birth is more important to us. My vet's opinions may sound blunt and cold and that's only due to my shorthand, but I'm very comfortable with him. Me being in the medical field for 20 yrs I like medical concrete info when trying out things but I know we can't always have that so that's why I'm on here for experience help.
I think we can agree though for some medical issues with no resons/answers
that seem to only happen to bulldogs "it's a bulldog thing". Not to sound cold but because they're a man made dog it's what we have to deal with.

BUT that doesn't mean we can't do all we can do to better take care of our bully family.

We're all continually learning, with Bulldogs! :-)

Here's some info from an experienced breeder-friend re water pups:

Sometimes the pups are fine, but the bitch herself is retaining water. The concern in this case is that she will get high blood pressure, the same as the pups.

If this IS the case, she needs to be monitored very closely as it gets down to the last week, with ultrasounds of the pups, and if they are stressing, low heart rates probably means they need to get they out early.

Javier, we all tend to abbreviate comments and sometimes its the details that the writer knows but hasn't expressed that changes a situation; your vet did sound "blunt" but if you know that's his personality and other factors guiding his comments, you should have that deep trust in his judgment. Unfortunately many times the owner is timid about asking hard questions and the vets are knowledgable but not good at communicating, so we have a lot of unanswered questions and concerns. Good luck with your bully mom and her pups. happy.gif

My plan......

I have a Ultrasound scheduled for monday to confirm but speaking to some radiologists (I work with a few of them) there is nothing I can do if she has any. In other words it's a chromosome defect in the pup. Labs can be taken on the mom and if sodium levels are high than you take the proper measures. So labs are something else that will be done also.

I posted earlier on head shakes and got feed back that it can be due to low suger and or calcium. Vet told me nothing written in concrete on what leads to this in bulldogs. It's a bulldog thing. Since I'm going to do the labs I'll find out the levels.
More info later.

water puppies

I feed a raw diet and I also change my water to a soduim free water.. I buy the big gallons. I have heard you can give Dandilion and that is supposed to help. I had a bitch looked like she was going to have some..took her off all treats, changed her water and within 24 hours she looked back to normal and she had 4 healthy babies 3 weeks ago.

Good Luck to you! Hope this helps.

Re: Delivery with possible water babies...

Nipples like you describe are not always a sign that the pups will be water puppies. Our one bitche's nipples looked like that with all three of her litters and she didn't have any water pups. I wouldn't do anything too drastic.

i agree they should be evaluated by a vet

and RX'd the meds.

Most vets won't distribute Lasix without monitoring the dog

and I understand why...they can be dangerous if not given properly and dog isn't taking fluids, etc. With the high value of bulldog pups today (besides their emotional value to US) I am always surprised with an owner who won't pay for a vet visit when having concerns about a pregnant bitch...what's $100 when she is carrying around thousands in her belly that may be in jeopardy?

get some lasix from your vet

get her off the carbs, IMO water puppies is from high blood sugar in the mom. So going off carbs and raw take the carbs down.

if your vet will not give you lasix (i would have a few harsh words) but give cranberry capsuls twice a day.

You can also give cranberry pills

to help her to get rid of excess water (I do this the last week or 2 of pregnancy)

I agree very much with Vicki

No one knows bulldogs like someone who has devoted years to their entire health and well-being. A vet will talk with you about generalities...a bulldogger who has experienced a parallel situation will give you exact details on what was tried and what was successful...we've seen this confirmed here so many times!

intresting thoughts from the vet and techs

Sounds to risky to just wait and see and nothing you can do

Sorry that is Crap. It's not their time and money you have put in to this either

I would go with a mentor who is a bulldogger they can help you out much more then most vets when it comes to bulldogs and pregnancy. I would also worry about who is doing my section if they have that mentality before puppies
