Chewing on back feet

Our bully Winston is about 15 months old and it seems that he has picked up a new issue. When he is in his kennel at night we get woke up to him chewing on his back feet. The weird part is that he really doesn't seem to do it during the day. His one foot is pretty raw and pink. We soak it in epsom salt and gold bond and it looks better and not as pink. But then when night comes around we go through the same thing again. Is there something to put on his feet to stop this? Has anyone ran into this issue before? Any help would be grateful.

Thanks..

Chewing feet

is typically a sign of allergy.

Have you changed food or added anything new to his diet? If not it could very well be seasonal. My Onslow has just started in with his foot chewing, this happens every year March/April. I suspect he is allergic to grass so we try to wipe his feet when he comes in and/or keep him off the grass as much as possible. Good luck. =)

Re: I asked my vet..Gus did the same thing all the time..

Thanks for the info his nails don't seem to be to long but that is something we'll try. At this point I guess we are willing to try anything happy.gif

He has a nylabone bone and other toys in his kennel. That is the weird part about the whole thing.

I asked my vet..Gus did the same thing all the time..

the vet suggested an alergy to his food..but he did not chew his front paws.
what it was in the end was that if he nails got a tiny bit too long he would chew them..
so I have to trim his nails more often..which he hates.

he does not chew his feet other then that..

Could be nerves or boredom

in which case something "safe" to chew on might be the answer. Are you familiar with Kong brand of chew toys? They are especially strong and a bulldog cannot break off a piece and choke or get intestinal blockage so they are safe to give a dog when you aren't around to watch. Many fill with a few pieces of kibble to interest the dog, or with couple tablespoonfuls of peanut butter and then freeze them...given to the dog it can keep him busy for an hour or more. The toys will cost about $15-$20 but that's not bad for something that will last. You can also try Nylabones (watch out for cheap substitutes!) as they too are safe to leave in a kennel. Lastly, could the dog have some allergy to grass or some kind of surface that he's walking on? You might want to try giving 1 or 2 Benadryl tablets before bedtime to see if (1)it satisfies some mild allergic response and (2)it may get him a little sleepy to where he will settle down to sleep more quickly. If this works for a couple consecutive days, discuss it with your vet regarding continued and continual usage...he/she may prefer something different but along the same lines.
