I have a 1 week old puppy who has aspiration pneumonia. She has had it for 4 days. 3 of the days she has not gained any weight. She is 16 ounces. When she was born she couldn't nurse or take a bottle cause she could not stay on. Her suckling reflex isn't good. So i had to tube feed her. The vet said she isn't going to be able to suckle and if she makes it she will have to be tube fed for a long time. He is making me bring her home today with meds. What can i do to help her stay alive. She has a been figting for 4 days, You can hear all the wheezing in her chest as it is very loud. But she is not weak at all. Should i give her another chance and take her home? Or should i euthanize her? I dont want her to suffer. And can this hurt her in the future?

karo
My miracle was a little karo on the nipple. I couldn't believe the difference. Wouldn't hurt to try. It started them sucking IMMEDIATELY.
GOOD LUCK

She is workming with her vet. I know the risks with pred at this point you have a choice life or death and its worth a try and deal with things as they come

what milk replacer are you using??
Are you running a humidifier or a vaporizor? I prefer Nurturall-C to tube/bottle/supplement. The ready made formula is THICK and makes it very difficult to aspirate on(not saying it can't happen) but when you get her to the bottle stage you want her to be on a very thick formula with a slow flow nipple.
While some would say these puppies don't have a chance or slim prognosis I feel the good Lord will take them home in his time so I refuse to "put them out of their misery". I've had pups survive that everyday I thought wouldn't make it and I've lost pups that were the largest and seemingly healthiest of the litter. So you never know.
Good luck with your girl and the entire litter!!

there is always hope
I just want to respond to this letter because I was kinda in the same boat a few weeks ago. I purchased a female bully puppy(Ellie Mae) at 7 weeks old. The breeder had the runt of the litter(Max) and just gave him to us because she didnt see much of a future in him. I took him home at not quite 2 lbs....his sister was 8 lbs. He was also diagnosed(at the time) with hydrocephalus. Six weeks later....Max is doing great, and at 11 lbs, the doc thinks he could have been mis-diagnosed because he is doing so fantastic.
I was discouraged at first because I thought I would have him a short time and then would lose him and suffer that heartbreak.....but love is very strong and im glad I decided just to love him as long as I was blessed with his life.
There is always hope.

being her home
Is she on prednisone. If not out her on it. She has to learn to suck tune her but also offer her the boobie.
Call me if you need anything pneumonia can take a while but is curable. The pup will have some lung scarring but as the pup grows it will get better
Its.a hard battle but worth the fight

she is so cute.
How much are you feeding? Most milk replacers are based on 1 oz for every 4 oz body weight divided by number of feedings (min) You can increase calories by increasing concentration if you use powder and then be able to decrease quantity (feeding less reduces chance of reflux or regurgitation) Instead of mixing 1 powder to 2 water you can mix 2 powder to 3 water.

I just got home from getting her. She is 17 ounces today. So she gained 1 ounce. Her wheezing seems to be a little better. The doctor has her on keflex 2 times a day. While she is home what i can i do to make it easier for her.

Actually she is losing weight
because her body is still growing in length (or should be). Does she try to suck? If you gave a bottle and helped her make a seal around the nipple (pinching the corners of her mouth and giving chin support) could she suck from a bottle?

Re: In my 16 years of experience
Thanks so much for the reply.

I went and seen her yesterday she was very strong, If she is till that strong is there a chance. And if there is a underlying problem how bad could it be.
Thanks so so so much.

In my 16 years of experience
these situations have never had a good outcome. If she can't nurse off Mom there must be some other underlying problem. She has aspirated once and will probably again. Euthanizing is a choice only you can make. Some people feel as long as there is life it is worth fighting. I am not sure if pups are neurologically developed enough to "suffer"but I can't stand the death cry they do. If the pup were mine based on my experience I would euthanize. You are welcome to email me if you want to ask questions directly.

Prednisone
I would be cautious with using this without talking to your vet first. It is the "feel good" drug--decreases inflammation. It is a steroid and can have a lot of negative side effects. It is usually contraindicated with infections. I self-prescribe a lot for my dogs based on my nursing experience but prednisone is a drug a use with caution and usually talk to my vet first.

Feeding
Based on most milk replacers a 1 lb pup needs a min of 4oz per day. If you are feeding every 3 hrs that is 8 feedings a day. She needs 15cc/ feeding (3 tsps.) Slowly increase her 1-2 cc each feeding. if she shows signs of intolerence back off. She won't grow if you don't get her calories up.
