Ace - abscess is BACK!

Well - just when I thought things were good....Ace has the abscess again. I came home last night and it had started. The GOOD about this time...one of his "holes" left from the drain last week is still a bit open, so when I push on the abscess - it oozes out - so I am able to get some of that junk out every couple of hours. My son is home with him today - playing mini vet. I called the vet in GA and am awaiting a call back. Will probably be taking him in zero dark early tomorrow morning for surgery...and hopefully this will be IT! I think he is going to need to put in another drain - put him on antibiotics and then next week - take him back and he will perform the surgery on the ear canal. I know he won't do the surgery tomorrow if there is an infection in there.

I just want my bully boy back to normal!

I will keep you all updated as I find out more from the vet and what the plans are.

Thank you all for your support:)

Were you flushing the drains?

If so, even if the drains were removed, try flushing it again through the hole that is left and try to keep it open. Is he done with his antibiotics?

Poor Ace. These infections have a way of lingering and being tenacious to beat.

Prayers for you and Ace!

Ugh!

Poor little guy! Wonder why it's just not healing? Were you potentially expecting a "relapse"?

It was a penrose drain....

So no flushing at all. It was two holes - the "tube" went in one and out the other to keep the area open....I would clean the area every morning and night. So there wasn't any flushing of the inside area at all. Kind of wish there was.

One of those holes is still open - so that is getting the stuff out which is good.

Just keeping it open until surgery in a couple of weeks!

Were you flushing the drains?

Good to keep it open. Were you flushing the drains yourself for a while? If you have any Nolvasan or Chlorahex solution left, you could actually push the gunk through to use it again. Even if you only have one hole, inject a small amount and massage it back out. It will santize and flush.

Hoping all works out just fine!

Drain removed last Friday....

The drain was removed last Friday...but one of the 2 holes is still "open" and with soft massage and warm compress - it opens up again and the gunk comes out. So I will continue to do this each day until the 4th - keeping it going so that stuff comes out! IF it closes, though - he is going to have to go to the vet to have another drain put in.

I spoke to the vet and he doesn't want to do any surgery until the infection is GONE! So he is mailing me a butt load of antibiotics (Ace already finished the other) and then on the 4th - he will go in for surgery.
