Our local shelter has a male pug up for adoption. Their best guess is that he is about 8 yrs old. He was found by someone in October and they kept him for 2 wks while looking for the owner. Then they took him to the shelter and the shelter has had him for another 2 wks. I'd like to get another dog but I'm afraid that we'll bring this dog home and then the owners show up. I'm wondering too if a senior pug could physically handle a bulldog puppy.

My experience with pugs
Is that they take no prisonners :) My sister's pug at 8 could out run, out deak and out bully dogs half her age :) She's 13 years old now and just had surgery to remove several teeth, a growth in her one nostril and to remove a "foreign object" in her other nostril. She's back feeling great and is raring to go.
As for the owners coming back... it's been a pretty long time... I say go for it!
I love pugsters.
An 8-year old pug is not an old dog.
Pugs are toys, so they have a longer life span, in general, than bigger dogs. I think this should be a good match. The pug will probably put the puppy in it's place pretty quickly and the puppy will learn to play gently with the little dog.
DO IT!
I dont have any profound reasons why, other than giving a poor orphan a good home.......OK well I do have a profound reason!

No pug for us
We went to the shelter and the lady said that the pug rescue was coming in on Monday to get him because he had quite a few medical issues. She didn't know if we could still adopt him or not so we were going to look at him anyway. But the pug wasn't with the other small dogs and the lady didn't know where he was. This was a volunteer and the supervisor was out getting things ready for their adopt-athon. They had a pug/beagle mix that we looked at but she stuck her lip up at us. She didn't growl but with a 2 yr old and a 5 yr old, I'm not taking chances. I'm sure the right dog will find its way into our lives when the time is right. Jack seems content with tormenting the cat for the time being.
