Tylan Powder, Tetracycline Young Dog?

I have heard that Tetracycline should not be used on Young dogs or it will yellow teeth. I heard under 12mos from someone and 18mos from someone else, can anyone tell me what the correct age is ? Also does Tylan Powder have ths same effect ? Yellowing teeth ?
Thanks
Deirdre

it can soften the tendons and cause growth abnomalties

it can be used but just short term. From what i have been told from a breeder i respect is that short term is ok, but not long term.

I know several who have used it, when it is life or death of the puppy.

Zithromax can have the same effects, we have used it several times to save puppies. We give Ester C too help development.

Why should Baytril not be given to puppies?

I have a 3 year old male that was given Baytril for an urinary infection at about 8 weeks of age and he had no ill effects that I know of. Just curious for future reference.

unless Tetracycline is...

the drug of choice and there is nothing elso to use in a young dog, say, under 18-24 mos.. I would not choose to use it.

Good points, Jay.

It is contra-indicated for pregnant women to be used for the first/second trimester of their pregnancy. Unfortunately, I was given it and my son's BABY TEETH came up with only half the enamel on some of them/ his permanent teeth are great.

It is a very potent drug.

Thanks for the reminder for all of us with younger dogs...always good to question what we are giving to our dogs. Baytril is another that should not be given to young pups...

Re: Tylan Powder, Tetracycline Young Dog?

My pup was on Tylan for a month for his tear stains. I asked the vet about the teeth staining and he said he had not heard that. It did seem to work for the tear stains and Mugs' teeth are still white.

Tetracycline

Hi Dierdre,

Tetracycline will yellow a puppy's teeth. It somehow affects the enamel. I don't believe Tylan (Tylosin Tartrate) has the same chemical structure as Tetracycline and I'm not positive if they have the same effect so as to reduce tear stains.

I think it's important to note that too much antibiotic of this kind will dry out the tear production and could cause dry eye to the point of causing corneal damage. I have seen a similar effect from sulfa-based antibiotics given orally for medical reasons.

I don't know if the tylan yellows teeth or not or if its permanent if it does.
The unfortunate problem with young dogs and tear stains is it seems to mainly affect dogs under 2 years old for some reason.
