i wanted to know, i just breed my bitch and she weighs about 38 pounds, what is the posibility of her having complications? and this is her first litter, is that true that 1st time litters are small, does that mean she will have a small litter?

I would guess 3 maybe 4.
My 50 lbs. girl had 3 her first litter. Some of it had to do I think with the fact she took her second AI (it was not as good as first-shipped).I know a friend just had 4 with her females first litter.
Get your sleep now and read as much as possible-great info on BBW.

I hope you have a mentor close by...
There's so much to know...

The size of the bitch has little or no bearing on litter size. As everyone else has said...get the ultrasound, get her on a minimal salt diet (talk to your vet about the amount of sodium needed during pregnancy). Make sure her nutritional needs are met, give folic acid daily. I add cranberry the last two-three weeks of gestation to assist in eliminating excess water. Good luck, and keep us posted.

I agree!!
Size does NOT matter - it's the genetics and small sized bitches can be very "Fertile Myrtles", as can a longer bitch. Likewise, she could only have a small litter. My DVM (and a HOF breeder) recommends that c-sections be done at 59 or 60 full days to avoid water puppies.
responce
her dam had 10 pups, but her mother had a long back, my girl is short backed, and im hoping for only 2 or 3 at the most, i think anything more than that would be to much for her to handle.
what does anyone know about water puppies?, i read about it on this website, is that true nobody knows how and why it happens?
Re: my small girls both had 4 in the first litter
i have her on royal canin medium puppy, and also feeding her cooked boneless skinless chicken breast, and cooked fresh tilipia and shrimp
thanks
i will do everything for my girl, she is my baby, im so scared i have read about alot of bulldogs just dropping dead cause there litters are to big. i breed her to a 57 pound male, but the breeder assured me that everything would be fine, that she was a perfect size. but im a m still worried, getting her ultra sound march,31
will tell you whats going on, she is 28 days in gestation, and she is really big. very scary.
will never do this again, NEVER.
my small girls both had 4 in the first litter
next litter 6 and 8.
Size doesnt matter, so you have to be very very careful. I put them on raw the last few weeks, to i know the salt content of what they eat.

Re: question
I would definitely get her ultrasounded. That way, you will have some idea as to how many to expect, however it is only a best "guesstimate". How many did her dam have in her first litter? I have a friend who's bitch had a litter of 12. It depends on how many ripened eggs she had at fertilization and the quality of the sperm at the time of fertilization. I would also watch her closely as it gets closer to time for her to whelp and take her temperature at least twice a day. Do you have a mentor? So many factors figure into this equation. Good Luck!
get an ultrasound
Your girl is VERY small and I would get an ultrasound. Her size and it being her first time has nothing to do with the number of pups she is carrying. We almost lost our 45lb bitch because she was carrying 6 pups and it was too much for her. She was health screened and I used a 50lb male because I was so worried about breeding a small girl. I had her spayed 6 weeks after the C-section because I would never put her through that again. Her mother had 8 her first litter but was a longer girl. Her grandmother had 7 her first litter.
Please do everything you can for your girl. You owe it to her !!
