Does anyone know of a handling class in central New Jersey. I am in a class now but it's not for beginners. We are both learning but I was looking for a little 1 on 1 attention. The class is rather large so its practically no personal attention. I would hate to pick up a bad habit and teach it to my dog. Thanks George
Take what you can get
Nothing wrong with going to a large class. One of the biggest things you will get from a conformation class is getting your dog used to being around many other dogs from different breeds.
The other half of that is learning what to do in the ring. The conformation class will give you some of that, but you will rarely find one that teaches the nuances that occur in the bulldog ring. For this, you have to go to a show, and practice in the ring after the show is over or in the lobby with a mentor.
Cathy Eke set me straight at a show in Cleveland, right there at ringside, at a show with like 4000 dogs. Pick out the good handlers at the shows (or have someone else tell you who is good) and apply the monkey see, monkey do technique to the best of your abilities.
Just remember, any conformation class you go to is better than sitting at home trying to find a better class. But, hopefully someone in Jersey can help.......
Good Luck.
no help with the class but i agree
that classes are geared toward people who already know how to show a dog, and its just matt time and experiance for there dogs. To bad there wasn't a jr handling class for adults to learn pattens, moving around a stationary dog ect. In our city they started a new class called show handling boot camp, maybe you could talk with the training facility and ask if theres a need for it in your area, or to be put in a smaller class so you can ask more questions and get help that your already paying for. You can get someone to video tape you walking and stacking your dog, then what part you are not happy with, or think needs improvement you can ask specific questions on ways to better in that area. good luck
