New rescue dog Diego. GOT 3 QUESTIONS. PLEASE HELP!

Hello everyone!!

I just got another Bulldog his name is Diego. So now I have Diego and Dora!He is a rescue, So he is about 8 months old. I have three questions if anybody could please take some time to help answer.

1) Adminzona's Water has a lot of Iron. Is that the cause of his stains? I feed him Royal Canin and clean his stains with Peroxide.

2) I got him kinda Skinny and he is very active. What can I feed him for him to add some weight? I already give him 4 scoops a day of Royal Canin.

3) How can I make him stop jumping on people when he first sees them? He goes crazy when he sees other dogs too, even though I have Dora to keep him company.

If you only have time to answer one question thats soo helpful. Thank you for taking the time to read all of this

Re the jumping, perhaps a combination of things...

1-keep a collar or harness on him for a while so you can reach him and restrain him when needed.

2-when anyone approaches, say "stop" and ask them to wait a moment before reaching the dog...hold onto the dog and tell him to sit (even if he doesn't yet know the term, begin using it and pull back on his hold to help him into a sitting positon) and then let the person approach. If the dog jumps up, the person backs up 1-2 steps. It may take 5 or 10 tries but the dog will figure out that someone won't approach until he calms down, ie, he sits.

3-when he does sit on command, whether you have to physically help him or not, give him some very sweet-sounding but not necessarily exciting-voiced "good boy! good sit!" If you get too excited with your voice, he will get excited also...you want to compliment him but yet keep your voice "smooth".

4-when working with Diego, try to not have Dora right there..she is a distraction. Or if she is there, focus only on Diego and what he is doing...you can't be working with two dogs at once. Patience and perserverence!

Alex...

Diego is absolutely adorable. Thanks for adopting a rescue!
As far as the food, you can give him more frequent meal, to put on weight. If that's not an option, all of the performance or working dog foods have more calories, fat and protein. You may want to look into them.
For the tears, I agree that filtered water is your best bet. Ah, the things we do for our dogs! lol
I also agree with Cathy - ignore the behavior. Don't let people bend down and start to pet him (ie- reward him) when he jumps up. If you can teach him a sit, you can give your visitors a small piece of cookie to reward him for sitting. This teaches the dog that if he sits when he sees people, good things come his way!

Check and see if the food has red beet pulp as an ingredient

that causes tear stains real bad for my Clovis, so I switched to a food that doesn't have it and they went away right away.

I live in Arizona too...

first of all, the water can make tear stains worse, try using filtered water - you can take your own jug to Fry's and get water out of their machine for pretty cheap. We have a reverse osmosis system that filters our water. The food you're feeding can also cause tear stains. We switched Ollie to Innova adult and his stains went completely away. And take him to obedience classes to teach him some manners. We will be enrolling Chester as soon as he's had his last shots.

Re: New rescue dog Diego. GOT 3 QUESTIONS. PLEASE HELP!

I know when had our white little girl we got a water fountain with filter from petsmart (petco and other places have them too) and that cleared up her tear stains. Tear stains are a red yeast.

Thanks for taking in a rescue!

Hope this helps a little
1) Arizona's Water has a lot of Iron. Is that the cause of his stains? I feed him Royal Canin and clean his stains with Peroxide.

Heavy metals can add to tear stains. So can many other causes. Have the vet check for any eye abnormalities. If all is well, try changing to distilled or filtered water. I have found Stridex acne pads to be very helpful for the tear stains. Just be sure to wipe the area after applying the stridex to avoid irritation, also avoid the immediate eye area.

2) I got him kinda Skinny and he is very active. What can I feed him for him to add some weight? I already give him 4 scoops a day of Royal Canin.

If you just got him, give him some time to adjust to the new environment and food before trying to add weight. If he continues to act hungry after feedings, add a little more food.

3) How can I make him stop jumping on people when he first sees them? He goes crazy when he sees other dogs too, even though I have Dora to keep him company.

IMO, the best way to break a negative habit is to completely ignore it. Have your friends and family turn their back on the dog until it is behaving well, then give him attention. Good luck!
