Size question

So Sherman had his recheck today and when I was leaving there was a lady walkin her bulldog in and she asked me how old.. I said 4 1/2 going on 5 months and she said "wow" and I asked why she said that because he's big? And she said no he's really small. "Hes not going to be very big. He must be a mini bulldog. Is he full bred? " She was kind of weird. It actually kind of felt like she was trying to "have a better dog than me" type thing idunno. I don't care I'm not like that. But, Sherman's front paws were bigger than her full grown dogs paws and I said that and nicely kind of pointed that out to her. Not sure if that means anything but I personally don't think he seems small at all he's growing like a weed. He's 27 lbs and pretty lean and leggy. Not fat. Idunno. Is that small? Or was she just one of those parents who's kid is always better lol

I would not worry about it.

Did you get to see Sherm's parents? Their size should give you a good estimate of what to expect for him when he's full grown.

Winston is on the smaller end for male dogs, weighing in at 48-50ish pounds, and his frame is smaller. But according to what I've read on the BCA website about the breed standard, he fits what is expected. I think there is a tendency towards larger bulldogs, which is not necessarily ideal per the breed standard (if that even matters to you). Honestly...if you're not showing or breeding who the heck cares how big he gets as long as he leads a happy and healthy life?

Just brush it off.

I agree

For me personally I have been curious how big he will be because he seems like he will be big to me and for her to say that seemed weird. I don't know what the paws mean if it means anything at all but this is actually the second full grown bulldog Sherm has been next to that his paws were bigger. That's the first thing I hear every time someone sees him. "Wow look at those paws. He's gonna be a big boy." Idunno. Just wondering. And yes his mother was a pretty big girl. He looks like his mom actually same type of markings.  But yea it doesn't matter. I know one thing he's not starting to grow into those paws yet they keep growing with him. Lol

ha!

I love the awkward puppy phase...he'll grow in to his paws and legs eventually. I have no idea the accuracy of the size of the paw to the size of the grown dog, but I'm confident that he'll be happy and loved and that is ultimately what matters. :)

On yea

Definately. I'm not in competition or anything. Doesn't really matter at all. Something tells me she's wrong tho. I think he'll just be normal size but what do I know.. Maybe this will be where he stops growing. Doubt it tho. If so he'll be easier to get into the truck lol

there you go

it won't matter in the long run. I'm sure some of the others on the board who have more experience with pups might be able to answer your size/age question. Winston was a rescue and I volunteer for rescue...but I don't have a lot of experience with pups (besides becoming a total goober whenever I meet one).

I've heard

That there isn't really a such thing as a mini bulldog and that its just breeders breeding runts on purpose and causes more trouble than we already have. Don't know if that's true or not but I almost said that. But what's the point of arguing with someone. Me and and Sherm are celebrating no e collar. I will post a pic he is not letting me use my ipad. Lol

People are so poopy sometimes!

No Sherm is just fine. My girl is small, about 45 pounds since she was 2. I love having a smaller girl, makes her sleeping on the bed easier to accomodate!

There is no such thing as a mini Bulldog. If anyone ever tells you that, they are blowing smoke. There are smaller and larger Bully's but no mini's.

Yea that's what I heard

One lady that saw me with him somewhere said "those are cool but I plan on getting a mini bulldog" I said, "actually I've heard there really isn't such a thing." She said "yes there is. It's a bulldog mixed with a pug." Ok. Whatever. Go buy that I guess no point arguing.  And yea it doesn't matter if Sherm is little when he's an adult. As long as he's healthy we're good to go at our house.

Yea. I had nothing..

She kind of like rolled her eyes and made a face like " what are u talking about dude." And truthfully I don't try to know everything so I don't argue. Maybe thats what it is for all i know. I don't know everything. I'm sure that thing will make some interesting noises however it comes out. Lol. My family had a pug. I remember how that thing was. Makes Sherm sound like a Olympic athlete in comparison. Lol. And he said loves you too.

Don't worry about it

My girl was also on the smaller end, like Sophia, at around 45 lbs. I thought it was great because I'm kind of petite myself and that made it easier for her to handle.

At 27 lbs at his age, he's just fine. And he'll grow into those paws and his head will get bigger.

And, as you say, who cares anyway, lol?!

ShermanK's picture

I can't wait

For his head to get bigger some reason. I think it's funny when they put their head on you. I can't imagine what's its like for a full grown bulldog to rest that monster on ur face like Sherm does lol

It's wonderful, actually

Stella's head was almost as big as mine :) Made for a bit of a tight squeeze on the pillow, but I didn't mind...

ShermanK's picture

Yea

Something about him getting all in my face makes me crack up every time. He's all pushy and rude. Just puts his droopy lips right on my head like its cool. Cracks me up.

i got my archie when he was

i got my archie when he was about a year...at the time he was about 54 lbs...day before he passed when he had gone in for surgery he was 57 lbs(i had him for 17 months),to me he was considerably big but when we'd get stopped by ppl who either had or knew of others who had bullies...i was told mine was considerably smaller...in fact our local pharmacist who has twin brother bullies average 75-80lbs in weight...did i care?nope not really...archibald in my eyes was unique and i woulda loved him big/small or even he if he was physically challenged in any way...one thing i DO know is that i miss my bugaboo everyday!
shermie is perfect just the way he is!!!lol

ShermanK's picture

I just told him

It helped with his confidence lol

Breed Standard --- Males about 50-55 lbs, Bitches about 40-45 lb

27 lbs at 5 months is a little small, he should gain about 10 lbs over the next month and the rule to thumb is add 10 lbs to the 6 month weight to get the average adult weight. Leggy and lean will weight less, of course, then bone and substance. Genetics plays a key role in how he will mature.
Nothing wrong with a 50 lb male, I wish my Kohl was closer to 55 lbs then his 65 lbs. He has lots of substance and bone but he's just too big, the other males in my litter matured about 55 lbs.

ShermanK's picture

Thanks

He's actually 4 months 2 weeks so I'm not sure in 2 weeks how much he will grow maybe hell be about 30-33. Idunno. Any recommended amount I should feed him? He's eating natural balance rabbit and potato. I feed him about 3 cups a day. A bit more tho because I throw him a few pieces here and there. He's always hungry but I don't want to make him unhealthy fat. Let me know if u have any advice.

Paws

It is funny you mentioned his paws.  When I first got Molly, everyone commented on how big her paws were and that she was going to be huge! It was the first thing people would say!  Well, she's about 1 year 9 months now (pretty sure shes done growing) and weighs in around 41-42 lbs so kind of on the smaller end for the breed. She is pretty lean and I guess "leggy" as you put it.  She seems to be taller than most bulldogs. So my point is, you never really know and they grow so fast! He looks perfect to me though! :)

Maybe

He just has big paws then lol. Yea it's fine by me however much he grows. And yea he's a handsome dude either way.  I definately noticed that there are so many different shapes and looks of bulldogs they all are unique it seems. I just found a chart for average bulldog weight in months and at 4 1/2 it was 28.6 and Sherm is 27. Eh. Whatever lol

But maybe she's not that small

From what deb said above ur girl is about right in there between 40-45

Sherman is still a "baby"....

He'll grow I'm sure. My bulldog, Tank, is almost 4 years old and weighs about 50 pounds. I think he looks fantastic! Not big and fat, just lots of muscle :) quite handsome if I do say so myself. I'll post a picture as soon as I figure out how :P

And as far as "mini" bulldogs go, I don't thing there is such a thing, at least if you check out the breed standard.

I love your pictures of Sherman. He's quite the handsome boy and I'm sure he'll grow into those big feet LOL!

By the way, I feed Tank Fromm dog food. No grains at all. Even any snacks I give him are no grains. Thankfully he has no allergy issues. He does have cherry eye in his left eye that he needs surgery for, but I'm hesitant to have him put under so I'll have to do some research.

ShermanK's picture

Thanks

Yea look forward to seeing pictures of Tank. It's starting to seem like his allergy situation is under control now that he's on grain free and nothing else. Maybe after another week ill try introducing something else to him and see what happens. And consider other foods too. But for now I've been really strict and he seems to be doing really good so I won't change anything yet.

give him time to grow!!

he is still so young and so much can happen during the first 2 years. At this age his head is going to look smaller than his body, his ears will look bigger, etc.....just give him time and he will be beautiful. I can tell by the pics that he is a beauty! Gracie was the same way. Now she is 65 lbs - gorgeous bully! (okay, Im a little bias!) Sherman will be just as big and beautiful!! can't wait to watch him grow up! :)

ShermanK's picture

He still

Has the big ears and long legs look. Kinda started looking awkward past few weeks. Guess this is his "ugly duckling 8th grade school photo" stage lol.
