Seasonal Flank Alopecia success!

I just wanted to share a success story we have had with tucker this past year. When everything was thawing out here in Toronto and the spring weather was showing up tucker began getting early signs of hair loss on his flank. It got quite bad at one point(he was black on both sides) so after researching it we figured it was SFA. I read that melatonin works so we started giving him melatonin every day. When we went to the vet for his yearly our vet confirmed that's what it was and suggested melatonin. I explained that we were giving it and after discussing the dose our vet told us to give him more. He told us to double the dose. When we first started giving him the melatonin it looked like it was working a little but that's it. I'm also not sure if we were just imagining it was getting better. After we doubled the dose it got so much better. It's actually completely gone and the hair is fully re grown. You can't even tell he had hair loss.

I just wanted to share so that anyone who deals with this knows that the melatonin really works. If it appears next year I'm going to start the melatonin right away, at the first sign of hair loss. I also have to thank people here on BDW because it's where I first read about the melatonin. It's also nice to know as an owner that my intuition was right and that I didn't need a $900 vet bill to figure something out.

Belly rubs to all the wiggle bums, Kate ;)

Always good to

hear about new things (that work)! Was he sleepy taking it at all? Besides a normal sleepy bulldog day!!! I've tried it myself to get to sleep (I'm not a very good sleeper!)

Nope!

It didn't make him sleepy at all. Apparently it doesn't affect dogs as it does humans :)

Katie Loulou had that.

she just needs more sunshine. and when she can't get out to get it. Give he 3mg of Melationa 3 time a day. that is all she needs and her hair will come back. she does not to see a vet Sunshine is what she needs. the melationa will trick her brain that she is getting the sunshine. you can pick that up at the store. Save your money for another Vet bill. You don't even need to go to the vet. Good luck her hair will come back.
