Seasonal allergy survey, Claritin? Zyrtec? Benedryl? What do u use?

Hi all,

Kibby has been on a  claritin a day for the last couple of years.. I recently stopped because she had a couple of head tremors and we didn't know hat caused them. Honey didn't make them stop. It happened starting when she had a really bad allergic reaction to something and her eyes swelled shut, we ended up giving her a benedryl, then the tremors started. I stopped all meds, and then the tremors went away within a week. Vet did a bunch of tests and all she could find was a slight uti and high protien level, she put Kibby on 3 weeks of cephlaxin, I am almost done with those.... But pollen levels have been high and I can hear Kibby getting congested and her eyes red.. So I been givin her half a claritin just once a week and no tremors, but I think it's not enough... I am thinking about trying something else? I only use benedryl for emergencies... But I somehow feel that maybe what I gave her before caused the tremors? What does everyone else give their bullies for allergies? How much and how often?

Penelope gets benedryl

It works great an she doesn't get drowsy at all. I give her 1-2 tablets a day an she's good, no scratching or anything. An Penelope is 45 lbs. but I guess it depends on the dog an sensitivity to things an weight? hopefully you find what work cause I know what a drag it can be not being able to find what makes you bully all better....lol best wish's for you an your bully

Our vet prescribed hydroxyzine for Newman...

he doesn't recommend benedryl, he says the hydroxyzine is better to stop itching and allergies.  Newman does really well on it, we have germinating bermuda grass right now and that's one of his worst triggers.

Interesting. I give two of my geldings Hydroxyzine for allergies

I didn't know you could give it to dogs as well. I was told it was better than Benedryl as well, and actually put it to the test by trying a 10 day run of benedryl on my worst allergy horse. Didn't even touch him. I tried it on my less allergic boy, nothing, but the Hydroxyzine keeps them going without itchies pretty well for the whole season.

I'm wondering about these ? too

I give Stoney Zyrtec everyday and it helps. I seem to remember Onslow's Mom saying she gives it twice a day, but I'm not sure. Stoney has not had any side effects and he's been taking it for over one year. I've tried to take him off and he starts getting itchy and his tail gets icky and he starts with watery eyes. But I'd like more info, I asked my vet and he said that it's ok to give him every day but he doesn't have a lot of dogs who take it so he didn't have a lot of info there. Just want to do the best by my dog.
