HI FROM BRUCE!!!

It has been a few months since I have been on here so i'd thought I would stop in and say hi!!! Bruce is amazing but has been driving me insane latley!!!!! Latley he has become my husbands new best buddy!!! WOW do I tell people now to do ther research befor picking this breed. His personality is perfect but at 8 months he is still peeing in the house and now recently in the crate!!!!! I broke down and started crying the other night.  I took him to the vet today thinking he has a urine infec and the vet said he has too much protein in his urine and suggested science diet..This is a bulldog vet Dr. Butchko, and I think the food is over priced and crap. Any food suggestions with low protein that I can get at Petco? I also wonder if im not givin him enough water because his pee smells very bad... I do NOT want to be a shitty dog mom and give up...He peed in the kitchen last night ad i was soooo frusturated and fed up that I rubbed his face in it..My husband was so and at me for doing that i alomst thought he was gonna rub my face in it..lol..not really but boy did he raise his voice at me and that never happens.. So back to square one!!! should I get him fixed? Will that help? On a brighter note here is a recent pic of Mr. Bruce :)

bruce you definitely are a

bruce you definitely are a stud!!! lol

smoochies the scrunchy face

Sadie had the same problem with too much protein in her

urine.  Dr. Butchko didn't suggest science diet, but to find a lower protein food.  We tried Solid Gold Holistic Blend at 18% and Hund & Flocken Lamb 22% both of them helped with the protein issue.  We stopped using them because of Sadie's allergy issues and now using Natures Variety Raw Lamb patties.  Good luck with your search for a new food, I know it can be frustrating.

Thanks!

Im going to petco tomorrow and we decided to try the Solid Gold Holistic .. It's in my price range and it has pretty good reviews. Bruce has been eating Taste of the Wild Pacific Salmon and that's 25%..I hope this helps him!! thanks for the suggestion, I never heard of this brand.

I just switched Gracie to Natures Variety.....

I switched her to the limited ingredient Lamb kibble and she loves it.   It's definitely a work in progress to find the right dog food.  This is my third switch and I think as they get older their body changes.  Gracie used to have no issues with chicken but now cannot tolerate it.  And I know how hard it is to train a puppy.  I remember crying a lot because I was so frustrated.  I thought I was doing something wrong. But consistency and routine pays off.  Before you know it, Bruce will be completely house trained.  Hang in there!!

Neuter

I would have him neutered.  Science Diet is crap.,  find something else.  The vets recommend it because they get a kickback.

:)

That is the new plan! We didn't consider it befor because we read on here I'm pretty sure in a discussion that intact males tend to be more healthy. Now i'm over that thought. Next week we r taking him in! Thanks!

We always feed 25% or less protein...

just because they don't need it any higher.  Is it possible he's just marking?  Some dogs will do that, especially ones that aren't neutered.  Does he pee right in front of you or when you're not in the room?  Be patient, it will get better.  We had trouble training Newman because he was with the breeder until he was 8 months old and was used to just going in his kennel with her other dogs.  We neutered him right away, and kept a close watch on him, and after a couple of months, he was totally house trained.

thanks!

The main place he will pee that is hidden is when we are upstairs he will go under my daughters' bunkbed. I pulled her bunk back and there was soooo much staining. I bought 2 of the large Natures Miracle urine cleaner and drenched her carpet with it. When he goes pee in his crate he hunches down like he knows he did a bad thing. I think he might be marking so we decided to get him fixed asap. A few days ago I was taking to him in my "high pitch happy voice" and he jumped up on me and peed a little bit..So it might be a combo of a few things. Im feeding him Taste of the Wild salmon and that 25% but I think im going to try a lower protein. Do u free water feed?

Be patient - he's still a puppy!

Please - I beg of you, be patient with him.  I almost choked on my coffee when I read the comment about you rubbing his nose in his pee.  I agree with Deb, he should get neutered but I want to add that you need to be more patient with him.

When we were training Sanford I read something somewhere that said "if your dog pees/poops in the house, take a newspaper, roll it up and HIT YOURSELF over the head with it - because it is your fault for not supervising him properly".

Of course this is meant to be taken in jest but it really resonated with me because I remember very vividly the forms of punishment used on dogs in my neighborhood when I was a kid and the rubbing the nose in it as well as the hitting with a newspaper were some of them and I knew there was no way I was going to do either to Sanford.

I know you are probably much busier around your house than I am (I don't have 4 kids, just Sanford) but what I can highly recommend you do is to ensure he is being watched at all times and make sure he gets on a regular schedule for eating and going out to do his "business".   If you can't have eyes on him at all times, then he should be confined to areas (not just his crate) that can be cleaned easily.  We didn't crate Sanford after the first month or so, at the time we had a galley style kitchen with tile floors that he was baby gated into when we left for work, or when I was busy around the house doing stuff and not able to give him my full attention.  This made it easier for me to clean up if he did have an accident and it gave him time to settle down when necessary.

Bruce is such a love bug, please be patient - take a deep breath and know that he will return so much love to you that in the end all the cleanup will be worth it.

one of the best posts in a LONG time

thank you for posting this.  I think once and awhile everyone needs a reminder to be patient.

One thing I think

And I know "they" say it's best, but some dogs die while being neutered....none have died as a result of not being neutered as far as I could tell. I googled studies of neutered dogs vs intact , and I think it shows there was no evidence that weighed either way........at .05 percent of healthy dogs, and .011 healthy cats dying during neutering.........I'm pretty content to yell, HEY, stop that and let the dog out, and they do learn......I don't know about protein content as I feed raw, and except for the bone, I'd guess it's all protein.......But science diet is a vet money maker...imho  Maybe it's a man thing, but I'm kinda against the lopping off of body parts because THEY say it's necessary, I would at least put some thought into whether to neuter of not, and while I expect people to differ, every problem solved by neutering can either be trained out of the dog or the dog will grow out of the behavior......again...imho, and I'm no expert....but I do have 2 intact Bullies.

Thanks everybody

The best thing about this forum is you can get good advise and honest opinions. Today was a great day for Bruce my hubby and myself. We went to Petco with Bruce, bought him some new food and a few new toys. I also bought the huge bottle of Natures Miracle urine cleaner and some cheddar cheerios ( training treats) and I think I found a new attitude. Never is it acceptable to rub a dogs face in it's urine and if I need a time out from Bruce I will do what I do with my kids..Step away from the situation take a deep breath and reevaluate. I also realized that I need to praise his good behavior more ofetn so he knows what I like. He has had no accident today because I had him leashed to my belt loop all day:). Thanks for reminding me to be patient. I don't know why I thought that my 8 month old pup should be fully house trained but we are in this for the long run. I might be crying again on here next week but I love Bruce and my kids are so attached that I see no other option than to get through this. Im going to get further testing done in a few weeks after he has had a full diet channge. Im also increasing his water intake to hopefully help flush his kidneys. I also bought hime a cute hotdog costume:).
