Food Advice

Good Afternoon All,

First and foremost, thanks to all of you who have helped us out with our new guy. He will celebrate his second full week with us this Saturday and things are coming along. I was hoping I could come to the well for one more piece of advice?

Since he has been with us, he has had some stomach related issues. Initially, upon his arrival, his poop was very runny and non formed. Upon his Vet visit, the vet gave us a prescription for Metro and he was given 1.2 milliliters, twice per day.

He was given Eukanuba Puppy Food by his breeder and when he arrived with us, we gave him Royal Canin Puppy Food. The initial transition was not gradual and it was disastrous. The Vet recommended a Chicken and Rice diet and to gradually add some Royal Canin back into the mix. Still nothing great.

We then put a teaspoon of Pumpkin into just the Chicken and Rice and things appeared to be getting somewhat better. We then tried the gradual few (ten to twenty pieces) of the Royal Canin into the Chicken and Rice. However, we are back at square one. No form, not extremely runny, but nothing outstanding.

The Vet has checked him and rechecked him for any parasites. All negative. So, apologies for this long winded post, but we are at wits end! Should we change foods and transition slow with the Chicken and Rice? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

PS. Still trying to get some photos posted of the little guy, but having a hard time figuring it out!

Stop with all kibble for now. Especially the Royal Canin.

Feed the boiled chicken and rice until his tummy is calm. Get him on a good adult food, bully pups don't need puppy food. You can try a grain free, but buy one that is a good brand, such as Natural Balance or Taste of the Wild. Blue Buffalo is a good brand as well, they have limited ingredient feeds that are not all the way grain free but close, and I feed my dogs those. You can give him a teaspoon of plain, fat free yogurt in his food to help him with digestion for a while. I feed a tablespoon daily to my dogs and it helps their gas issues:-)

After tummy is solid, start very slowly adding some kibble. A puppy should eat one cup twice a day, but splitting it into three meals is preferable for a youngster.

Good luck!

So most if not all people here

Will say that Royal Canin is crap food. I had my dog on it as a young dog and he agreed with it but I switched it out for a grain free food that doesn't have a high protein level. I feed something called "Now" that's made here in Canada. I like that my dogs food isn't coming from across the world. Other good foods people here feed are Taste of the Wild, Blue Buffallo(grain free one) and Natures Balance. A lot of people feed raw as well. Basically I would suggest you avoid the RC. Hopefully more people will have suggestions.

I agree...

Royal Canin is a crappy food.  So is Eukanuba.  We had the same problem with Chester when he was a pup.  As soon as we would try to switch him to a new food, he would get loose.  He was on the bland diet for quite  while until we got a handle on it.   Keep up the pumpkin and you can also substitute a scrambled egg for the chicken if you need a quick meal.

Diarrhea and feeding

After many years experience I found that what worked best was total fasting for 24 hours--except water. Then 1/4 of usual diet and amount AM and PM. Next day 1/2 of usual diet. If stool is normal then I increase to 3/4; if not normal I go back to 1/4 or stay at 1/2 depending on how much poop. The goal is to slowly increase amount. I never had success putting a dog on chicken and rice. You still need to get them back on a kibble or canine specific nutritious diet. There are lots of causes for diarrhea. Even overfeeding can cause it. Frequent or sudden change in food can also cause diarrhea. I have never felt the brand of food to be the issue unless the dog actually has a food allergy to an ingredient. I fed Eukanuba for years and recommended it to my puppy buyers. My dogs did very well on it and I showed and bred. I switched to Costco's Kirkland because it actually had good review and was cheaper. My dogs did well on it, too. In fact I feed it to my Doxie today and she does fine. Medication-wise when I had the occassional dog I could not get regular on fasting to rest the gut and slow introduction of food I found the combination of flagyl and albon seemed to work even if there was no indication of parasites or bacterial infection.

Wow

Thanks to all. Well, Nature's Balance did the trick. He absolutely loves it and the results are very good! Again thanks to everyone on the forum. Now, to solve the mystery to show all of you how this handsome young man looks. I am trying to post some photos, but can't quite figure it out.
