Bulldog needs a Home

Hello, I am needing to find an AMAZING home for my daughter's bulldog and I hope someone here can help.  I have posted here before about Spike and his health problems (which I will explain again here), and my daughter who is 19 and in college cannot afford to care for him.  She has learned a lesson that it was simply not a good time in life to get a puppy.  I also have other dogs of my own and cannot afford to keep Spike myself.

Spike will be 1 year old on april 8th.  He is a beautiful brindle bulldog, big guy about 55pounds.  He has been neutered

Spike is incontinent and he has epilepsy (he had 2 severe seizures).  Medications control both of these issues, my daughter is paying about $80 a month for the medications that he needs.  Spike went to a neurologist who doesn't think we have reason to be concerned about the seizures being some other health problem, she thinks it's probably just epilepsy.  He was started on a mild medication for it, and he has not had a seizure since then so that is good news.  But Spike will have to be kept on both of these medications his whole life.  -Also he is on an expensive grain free food, this is the only food we found that he can eat and keep his stools solid (and his gas tolerable, lol).

Spike is a happy go lucky boy who just LOVES all people.  He is housebroken (we have a doggy door).  He has been living with my 6 year old son, but I would say he needs to be with older kids, probably age 10 and up.. or depending on their dog experience.  My son loves to play "tag", where he will run and Spike chases and jumps up.  Probably not a good game to teach a bulldog I realize.  My daughter refused to take him to training and although he is really well behaved for us, he could use a great training class with a dedicated Mom or Dad.  He doesn't realize his size and strength of course.

So Spike needs a home where someone is around alot of the time (not alone for 10 hours a day!), where someone can understand his health problems and be dedicated to giving his meds on a 12 hours schedule (I feed and give him meds at 8:30am and 8:30pm).  The incontinence is totally controlled as long as he has his medication, he never has an accident.

Any assistance or direction would be appreciated.

We in the Dallas area of Texas.

Thank you!

I wish I could help!

He sounds like a great guy!  Have you contacted the bulldog rescue in your area?  Good luck.  :-)

Cristy, there are a couple of good Bulldog rescues in Dallas.

I am out of town until Sunday night. Let me get home and I will get Spike placed for you. There are a lot of us right here in Dallas that will help you. Don't get anxious or in a hurry, he absolutely must go to a home that is good for him. Hang tight, I am going to send you a private message. We'll get you some help, you are awesome for doing everything you have for Spike!

I would contact a rescue

I would not just let him go to any one. If you place him in Rescue He will be place with the right people who will be there just for him. Who can afford his meds and the rescues does keep up with follow up to make sure he is taken care. I know some of them does this. This would make sure he will be in safe hands and very well love. He will find his forever home with the right people.

Rescue:

To all who have responded:  I HAVE contacted rescues.  As a former rescue volunteer, I know that rescue groups are not too kind to "owner surrenders".  I certainly got the cold shoulder from Bulldog rescue (which was not unexpected), they in turn pointed me towards 'special needs' bulldog rescue.  People I don't know.. not sure about all that.  I feel like I can do better on my own and possibly from people on here.

Now I do have a rescue group (one that I worked with before, that is not breed specific), that I will place for him adoption with but I thought I would check on help here first with the Bulldog community.  This is a rescue that I know and trust their process so that is a backup option.

Thanks!
