Tail docking info

Now don't anyone get wild on me, I'm just looking for info and guidance from the folks I trust.....but, Brother had to have a part of his tail removed.  We fought it for over a year with every remedy I could find...everyone!  No luck, now he's so much better, no odor, no infection....no washing everyday with the shower hose. We felt bad, but the vet said it wouldn't get better as it was, and he was right.....except for the feeling like a loser [me] and the healing time [2 weeks] it's been all positive, and the dog has a truly better life, as he is not suffering now.

So, the vet said some breeders actually have him dock the puppies tails, shortly after birth as bone is not formed yet. [true] I don't remember the age he mentioned as I was stressing over Brother, as he hadn't had his operation yet at that time. I do know this is not permitted for showing.

But....I have no puppies,  I do want to know what the deal is on this, and what others think.  This vet does know his stuff, as far as gas and putting Bullies under for surgery, and Brother is fine, so I do trust him but I want to hear from the group......as I believe owners and breeders have info vets may not have.

No anger please as I haven't a position on this yet and the health of the dogs is the only concern I have.

Bulldog pups do not have docked tails, period.

Perhaps your vet was referring to other "breeds" such as Olde English Bulldogge, Victorian Bulldog?

Thanks

I didn't think so.  I guess it was kinda silly to ask as I'm against docked Dobermans and other dogs.

Like I said I felt so bad about Brother, but he was being tortured and not even those Lilly antibiotics would touch it, nor Animax.  We would wash him and medicate under there and in the morning it would have drained down over his hip and leg. Truly it was so bad the dog would walk into the bath room and back up into the position to be washed.  Gold Bond didn't help, nor Johnsons ,or Malapledge didn't help, but did smell nice.

Now I clean under his tail with a baby wipe and dry.....While I have help here, it was tiresome, and the dog is so much happier.

Glad that Brother is doing better

He had to have been in a lot of pain. Amputating the tail is sometimes the only way to relieve the problem.

I am with you, I don't agree with cropping ears or docking tails. I think dogs look just fine when left untouched.

Hugs to the patient

Thanks again

Yes, he's fine now.  They only took some of it.

I sure felt bad during the week he felt rough, but he's back to his old self now.

Tail Docking

NO, bulldogs tails are not docked. Amputation is necessary at times for bad tails. Breeders should not breed dogs with major tail problems (IMO) or dogs with deep tail pockets as it can be a serious health issue. Any reputable breeder would consider this when selecting lines/pedigrees and dogs to breed too.

Not one of my dogs needs daily cleaning, no tail pockets. I only clean when I notice someone getting ichy, usually because there is a buildup of dead hair under there.
