Pemphigus Foliaceus

My almost 1yr baby has been experiencing symptons that have led the vets to think she has pemphigus foliaceus. Does anyone have any pictures of what it look like on their bully? I personally think the vets are wrong because Daisy only has this issue on her feet. Supposdley, just having it on the feet is very rare. It also doesn't seem to look as bad as the pictures I have seen of dogs with this. I personally think she has developed a food allergy to her BB food, which has changed formulas lately from what I have read.

Are you sure it isn't an interdigital cyst

n/m

Not sure really what it is? Any ideas?

Pictures...please help!!!!

This is what her foot looks like now, we have been battling this for 2 weeks now.

This is what it started as...

She is an indoor only dog, right?

If so, have you recently shampoo'd carpets, washed floors with a different cleaner, put down new tile/carpet/wood?

Indoor Only

Yes, she is indoor all the time. Only goes outside to sun bathe and to use the bathroom. Nope we have not got any new flooring and we haven't changed what we are cleaning the floors with. The only thing that we know has changed is we started to look into her food yesterday and found out within the last month or so BB changed some ingredients. Anyone else have problems with BB?

Are you soaking it? Does not look like IDC

I would soak it 2x daily for 5 minutes in betadine, Epsom salt solution.

Any possibility she burnt her pads on concrete?

What is BB brand food?

I believe Blue Buffalo, but not sure.

I haven't heard of an ingredient change in Blue Buffalo though, so am not sure what the feed is.

I always have had success with it....

I have thought about going back to it recently. My girl that didn't digest it well is no longer with us, and my other dogs all liked it pretty well. Might try it again....

Soaking

We are not soaking currently becuase the vet told us not to. She did not burn her pads on concerte. And BB is Blue Buffalo.

AmyandSophia's picture

I kind of agree with maybe soaking...

Even if the vet said not to, I would t least try it a few days to see if it would work. A mix of Betadine and Epsom salts would work, like Deb said. You could also try Chlorhexidine, 1 part Chlorhexidine to 3 parts water. Soak for a few minutes, remove the paw and let it sit a few more minutes, then throughly rinse it so all Chlorhexidine is gone.

is your vet a Ulldog vet? Sometimes vets don't have much experience with this breed, and they don't know how to diagnose a bully...

Vet

Yes, our vet is a bulldog vet and we went and got another opinion as well from a 2nd vet just incase and for my own peace of mind. Betadine and Epsom salts won't burn the open wounds will it?

AmyandSophia's picture

No, they will kill any bacteria that may be involved,

And the Epsom salt will soothe any pain or itching that may be present.

Glad your vet is bully smart! Lots of them are, but lots of them aren't. I had a very bad experience with a non bulldog vet, and it cost Sophia a lot of eye trouble in her life time. I could just scream for not getting a second opinion, and have always, always after that incident checked any vet out thoroughly before using them for my bully babe...

Chlorhexidine

is what we use... From cleaning their ropes to cleaning the inside of their paws... Try it... You can get a huge bottle on Amazon for like $15.00 it will last a lifetime.... Our breeder told us about it. I am also a fan of Neem oil for skin issues in dogs... Google in, it helped with our bully's mites!

AmyandSophia's picture

I love Chlorhex. I use it exclusively on my animals.

My horses are always into something, and I have a gallon jug of it in my house at all times. I dilute it and it lasts for ever!!!

Amy - Does it look like the pad is trying to sluff off?

Honestly it looks a little stange, but I don't understand why a vet would say not to soak it. I can't imagine it would do any harm and if it helps to get rid of any bacteria it can't hurt.

AmyandSophia's picture

Yes, exactly what it looks like.

Like the skin is slouging off. I can't understand not stopping bacteria if it is present, which we don't know, but might as well try!

pemphigus foliaceus sufferer.

Hi!!

My dog is currently fighting this disease. The feet usually start out with building yellow crusts that come off in chunks. At first I thought Ollie was having a reaction to the salt on the sidewalks in the winter because his feet went bright red and sore and then the crusting started.
Hope you get some relief!!
