Multitude of Health Issues in bulldog Puppy (head tremors, incontinence)

Hi all, I am new to this site but looking for help and answers.  My daughter who is 19 years old was given an English Bulldog puppy as a high school graduation gift.  They live in my home still and I have 2 other dogs as well (a mutt and a poodle).  This will be long as I try to fit everything in here.

We brought Spike home when he was about 9 weeks old, he was born April 8th, which means he's coming up on 9 months old.

I immediately noticed a problem upon bringing him home.. I would take him out to potty, he would pee 3-5 times, then come inside and pee another 3 times on the floor.  The breeder had sent us with a week's worth of antibiotics in case he came down with kennel cough or something, so I suspected he had a UTI and we gave him the meds.  In the meantime, let me mention, he was also having head tremors.  I had a boxer before that had head tremors (but only one episode) so I sort of knew not to panic about it.  Although Spike seemed to have a head tremor episode every day.  After the antibiotics he was still having the peeing issues so I forced my daughter to take him to the vet.  Vet said he still showed a UTI so sent home more meds.  We mentioned the head tremor and the vet seemed to have NO clue what we were talking about.  The peeing problem would get slightly better.. in the meantime Spike was showing signs of being housetrained- using our doggie door etc, but he would still have accidents.  I work from home so I am with him all the time, and my observations were that he didn't know when he was going- the only way I can describe it is that the pee would "fall out" of him.  After he finished the antibiotics again the problem became even worse.. he'd be playing and a load of pee would just fall out, for example.  We go back to the vet again, to be told he no longer has a UTI.. vet doesn't know what to do.. maybe Spike should be sent to live on a farm.  (WOW).  We also showed him a video of the head tremors we see.. he said we could go do a bunch of expensive tests but he thinks it might just be that Spike's neck muscles are still developing or something.  It does seem to happen when he's tired or he's been sleeping.  Vet then sent us home with some Proin 75, mentioning that he usually prescribes this for old female dogs who are losing bladder control, but he said we could try it out.  Well.. within 2 days, the peeing problems stopped!  Either he was magically cured, or the Proin was helping him, or something.  We kept him on the Proin for a couple of accident free months, (Spike seems completely housetrained with the doggie door), then we ran out, he started peeing again in the house.   So we updated the prescription and will keep him on this.

He is now having some accidents again though so I'm wondering since he's bigger if the dosage needs to go up.  Spike still has head tremors, I'd say 6 days a week out of 7 at least.  Of course it doesn't seem to bother him, and stops after a few minutes.

My other BIG issue is that my house REEKS, smells, like DOG.  I can stick my head and nose into Spike and I don't really smell the odor.  I was also thinking that with all the potty issues we really just need to get the carpet cleaned where we know he's had accidents.  However.. my daughter took him for 2 days to visit a grandparent of hers, and when he left the house, the smell was immediately gone!!  It was amazing and clean in my house and no stinky dog smell everywhere.  She brought him back 2 days later and we're back to having the smell here.  While Spike was gone I gave my other 2 dogs a good bath also, but I'm convinced something about Spike makes the house smell.  He HATES baths although of course we have bathed him but it doesn't seem to help at all.

So now he's having a few potty accidents again, my home stinks like I can't describe, he still has head tremors.  The other noticeable thing is that his ears always seem dirty.  not infected, though, just like dirty.  We have a solution the vet gave us and we'll clean his ears then they go right back to being dirty.  They don't smell though.  He lives indoors.. uses a doggie door to go in and out, I've never seen him spend a lot of time in the yard though, so this is puzzling to me.

My daughter has had him on about 5 different foods since we got him including Bil-Jac, Natural Balance, Merrick Salmon (this made Spike smell like a fish factory, horrible food, and he would belch and the whole house stunk of rotten fish!!),  then to Solid Gold (lamb).

I did some googling about incontinence and found some people have said that Grain Free food helped their dogs.  So we are in process of switching him from Solid Gold to Natural Balance Grain-Free sweet potato and chicken limited ingredient food.

We have not had Spike neutered yet, in fear of making the incontinence issue worse possibly.  My daughter says the Vet wants to ZEUTER him.. ??  Not sure about that, never heard of this exactly.

So to summarize the issues we have:

Spike is probalby incontinent (?) but does okay most of the time on Proin

my house STINKS although Spike himself doesn't seem to smell

Dirty ears

head tremors almost daily

I apprecate all thoughts and responses.  I have owned Boxers before, I would say I am dog savvy but Spike has brought in a whole new list of issues that I don't know what to do with, and to have these when he's a puppy is just weird.  After all my complaining, let me mention that I LOVE this dog, I would never think of re-homing him or anything like that.  My daughter will be getting an apartment and Spike will be going to live with her, this will all become her concern as a young adult but in the meantime I'd love any help to help her in the long run.

Thank you so much for listening,

Cristy

Ok, I will reply to each issue...

1. Incontinence could be a sign of Spina Bifida. It isn't always the issue in these types of problems, but I would find yourself a good, well respected vet in your area that has a lot of experience with Bulldogs. He will know what to look for to diagnose Spina Bifida. It isn't the end of life as you know it if that is the diagnosis, it will actually help you control and contain the urine better with some simple solutions like a belly band, and you will have a happier household.

2. Get the puppy on the Natural balance grain free or any of the higher end grain free feeds. Taste of the Wild is popular, you can buy it in most feed stores, a tractor Supply, etc. That will help some with the ears, which I suspect is a yeast issue from allergies. You can clean them out with a 1-1-1 mixture of Apple cider vinegar, hydrogen peroxide, and warm water. Dab a Q-Tip in the solution and gently clean the ears until no more gunk comes out.

3. Head shakes can generally be pinned on a sugar issue, giving a tablespoon of peanut butter, ice cream, or Karo syrup will end the head shake immediately. Changing food will probably help as well, it did for me. My girl never has had another head shake since I switched her feed.

4. The smell, I suspect, is a tail pocket that hasn't ever been cleaned. It is located directly under the tail, and is a pocket that goes back into the body sometimes an inch or more. Because of its location directly above the anus and under the tail, it can get funky pretty quickly. You need to stand your dog in a sink or tub that has a spray nozzle attachment. Spray the inside of the tail pocket with Luke warm water, then gently clean with a mild dish soap, rinse, clean again, until no black crud comes out. I use surgical gloves and fingers, it does the best job. Dry with paper towels and make sure it gets very dry. You can use a dab of Desitin in the pocket to help keep it moisture free. Clean it every 4-5 days as needed, but any more often can irritate it and actually make it worse.

Good luck, and ask anything you have questions about:-)

THANK YOU, a few questions:

2. Get the puppy on the Natural balance grain free or any of the higher end grain free feeds.

- We are in process of switching from Solid Gold to the NB Grain Free he's at 1/2 and 1/2 right now so I think tonight I'll just give him all Natural Balance.. even if he has loose stools for a day I think just getting him switched over is best.  His gas is already not quite SO smelly just with the 1/2 and 1/2 swap, thank goodness for that.. I didn't mention above how bad his gas seems to be at night.  :O(

3. Head shakes can generally be pinned on a sugar issue,

-I have read this before- why would a dog have a sugar issue?  Is it something about the feeding schedule?  (we feed twice a day. as close to 12 hours apart as possible, like 8am / 7pm generally).  Would giving him a small meal mid-day of his regular food help this?  I realize we have to watch his weight, he is already over 50 pounds but I think he is gonna be a BIG boy/ i.e. he's not overweight for his size.

4. The smell, I suspect, is a tail pocket that hasn't ever been cleaned.

- Can you SEE this pocket under there?  Of course its nearly impossible to lift up that little nub of a tail to look but I will get my daughter's help and work on his back end for sure.  I take my poodle to a really great groomer if I'm not successful I can ask them about that/ if they can help.

More info.

A tablespoon of plain, fat free yogurt in each meal will go a long way toward curbing the gas, as well as the food change...I usually just switch and deal with the results of a fast change. Watch the protein level in whatever you wind up feeding. 25% is about the highest you want for protein. Less is good.

Head shakes may be caused by a drop in blood sugar. A tablespoon of the things I mentioned will bring the sugars back where they should be. Not sure why it happens though in dogs!

No, generally you cannot see the tail pocket. You will need to put a surgical glove on and feel under the tail for an indentation that would indicate the pocket. It's gross, but you really just need to check for it with a finger or two:-) A lot of groomers are clueless about tail pockets on a bulldog, but a good vet with Bulldog experience could help you find it should your "exploratory expedition" fail!

Amy is so right about finding a good bulldog vet...

there is a list of reommended vets on the home page or if you tell us what area you live in, someone can probably recommend one that they have experience with.  My Newman has head shakes every once in a while.  We give him a spoonful of Karo syrup and it stops them right away.  Poor little guy, I hope you can fix all these annoying problems that he has.   Finding a good vet is the first step.  Keep posting here if you need any more help and also let us know how he's doing.

Bulldog Vets:

Thank you again everyone..

I am in Allen, TX, zip code 75002.

We have been seeing a vet thats a good distance away in Frisco that the breeder recommended to us.. but as much as we've needed to visit there, the 1/2 hour drive is really no fun.  Although fortunately Spike is a GREAT passenger.

Thanks!

Dang, wish you were closer to Azle!

I am west of DFW, and there's a pretty good Bulldog vet out this way. If you look on the home page at Bulldog vets, you could call a couple of the clinics on the list around the Metroplex and maybe you could get a good lead on one closer to you. Good luck!

Also, feeding times....

12 hours apart should be ok, but since he is young still it might benefit him to have a grain free biscuit in between feed times. I feed between 1/2 and 3/4 cup twice a day, my bully looks good, but she is smaller than your boy. I wouldn't give your pup more than a full cup of feed twice a day, see if he maintains weight on that. If he starts to slim down, you can add a touch more feed to get his desired weight, then stick with that amount.

Spike had a seizure!!

Tonight, I'm in bed and hear what sounds like screaming, I run downstairs, and Spike was having what I assume is a seizure.. a HUGE seizure.  He was screaming and flailing and of course he peed, I would say we sat with him for maybe 3 minutes before it stopped.  He was in his crate fortunately (we leave the door open but he does sleep in there.)  Seems like it took him a couple minutes to realize who we were and where he was, he snapped at me during it when I was trying to just pet him, but I realize thats normal, but he was definitely "out of it".  I guess its a Grand Mal seizure.

He seems okay right now, so we will keep an eye on him, then visit the vet in the morning.  He's only 9 months old.. poor puppy, I've never seen a seizure and that was truly terrifying.  We were going to run to the emergency vet, but I'm realizing that if we can wait until morning that would be ideal and from what I found on the internet, another seizure right away would be really unusual.  Of course if it happens again, we will go immediately.

Spike Vet Update:

Spike's vet is referring us to a neurologist.  They think with his head tremors happening every day that those could actually be petit mal seizures.  He definitely had a grand mal seizure that night.  He seems normal, but had a head tremor episode again today.. but thats pretty much every day for us as usual.

Hi Christy. I hope you get some resolve for your boy.

I'm sorry to hear about the seizure. Hopefully the neurologist can help you find a solution for him and he can live a long and happy life.

Who are you going to see? I always like to track good vets in my area for future need. I live about 70 miles west of DFW metroplex in Wise county. If you need anything, there are a lot of really good bulldog folks in DFW and surrounding areas.

Another Seizure!

So ~12 days after his first seizure, Spike had another one, at 2:30am today.  :O(

This was another bad one although it seemed shorter and maybe not quite as violent as the first seizure.. although it might just be that WE weren't as scared because we knew what was happening this time.

Spikes neurologist appointment is 1/28 so in 2 days from now.

We are seeing a neurologist named Julie Ducote, I think she's in Lewisville or Carrollton area. I will post an update after our appointment, I'm really interested to see what they say.

Thanks!

Cristy
