So we had our first encounter with a bee sting over the weekend. My question is; can a bully have a delayed reaction from a sting? The emergency vet wanted us to continue to keep fatboy on benedryl for the next 5 days. This seemed excessive to us.

What type of reaction did he have to the sting?
The site of the sting can be itchy for several days.
He started to swell and was doing this sneezing/gagging thing.
This and breathing heavy.

Could you tell where he was actually stung?
They usually get stung on the face and it's not a problem unless the breathing is compromised. Minor itching and swelling can be treated with benadryl and a topical hydrocortisone cream. You don't want him to scratch the area he was stung. Also, Tagamet or Cimetedine is an antihistamine and can also be given.
With that being said, I have an emergency supply of steroids in case my dogs get stung. In a dire emergency when the airway is closed, you can even administer liquid benadryl rectally with a syringe. Some Vets will also prescribe epinephrine to keep on hand in case of an emergency.
I lost a bulldog from complications of a sting a few years ago so I'm a little paranoid about them.
